Albany Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ - Sean Zimmerman and Nick Palmieri scored goals for the Lowell Devils in their pre-season opener, a 3-2 defeat against the Philadelphia Phantoms at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton Monday afternoon.
Offense started quickly in the opening frame. David Laliberte staked the Phantoms to a 1-0 advantage just 2:08 after the drop of the puck, scoring an unassisted breakaway tally. Laliberte added to his totals with his second of the game at 13:59 on the man advantage. Oskars Bartulis and Mario Kempe assisted on the goal. Lowell got on the board in the final minute of the frame with a tally by rookie defenseman Sean Zimmerman. A sixth round pick of New Jersey in 2005, Zimmerman has p! layed briefly in the AHL while finishing his major junior career with Spokane in the Western Hockey League.
Former Ohio State University netminder Dave Caruso remained in net for the Devils through the second stanza, and saw his team tie the game up early in the frame. Nick Palmieri, a 2007 Devils pick, knotted the score up with a power play tally just 1:27 in. Defensemen Olli Malmivaara and Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre picked up the helpers, and the score remained tied heading into the third.
Frank Doyle relieved Caruso between the pipes to start the third, and the game appeared headed to overtime. But the Phantoms regained the lead for good. Patrick Maroon potted the game winner with just four seconds left in the period, off a fluke redirection in front of the net. The goal made it 3-2, which was the final score. Caruso finished the game with 21 saves on 23 shots for Lowell. The Devils shots leader in the contest was Noah Clarke, while Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond was the team penalty minute leader with six (three! minors).
