Devils Jolted by Monarchs, 4-3
March 31, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Albany Devils News Release
LOWELL, Mass. - Matt Lopes came into the game in relief of injured starter Jeff Zatkoff to make 42 saves and allow the Manchester Monarchs to overtake the Lowell Devils for a 4-3 win at the Tsongas Center on Wednesday. Jonathan Zeiler notched two goals as Manchester scored four unanswered to erase an early 2-0 deficit.
With his team down 2-1 in the second, Zeiler would tie the game at 9:10 when Marc-Andre Cliché pulled out from behind the net to hit him with a centering pass for his first of the night.
Manchester then took its first lead of the game with a power play goal at 4:21 of the third. As Trevor Lewis broke in alone, Devils goalie Mike McKenna swiped the puck free with a poke check, but still saw it skitter across the goal line.
Three minutes later, Zeiler's second of the game turned out to be the eventual game-winner when Cliché fed a pass from the boards that was tapped into the top corner.
The Devils would get action going early when Brad Mills fired a shot from the end line that would pinball off the skate of Jeff Zatkoff, giving the Devils a 1-0 lead 49 seconds into action.
Patrick Davis would make it 2-0 at 5:33 of the first when he fought off a defender, pushed toward the net and tucked in his 15th tally of the year. Zatkoff would suffer an injury on the ensuing collision that would force him to exit the game.
Signed to an amateur try-out agreement Wednesday morning, Lopes came into the game for his first professional appearance. The East Falmouth, MA native stopped all but one of the 43 shots he faced to allow the Monarchs to rally for the win.
David Kolomatis got Manchester on the board during a 5-on-3 advantage, making the score 2-1 with 5:42 until the first intermission.
Lowell pulled within one goal midway through the third period on Matt Halischuk's breakaway goal. McKenna stopped 31 of the 35 shots thrown his way in the loss.
The Lowell Devils hit the road to take on the Hartford Wolf Pack on Fri, Apr. 2 at 7:00PM at the XLCenter. Tune into AM1510 or go online to AHLlive.com to catch all of the live Devils action. For more information, call (978) 458-PUCK or go to www.lowelldevilshockey.com.
