LOWELL, Mass. - The Philadelphia Phantoms recorded their 500th win at the expense of the Lowell Devils by a final score of 3-1 on Wednesday night at the Tsongas Arena. Phantoms center Jared Ross scored two goals to help his team to their fifth consecutive win and also extend the Devils' losing streak to three games.
After a scoreless opening period, the Phantoms struck first at 11:12 of the second with a wrist shot by Patrick Maroon that deflected off of a stick over the glove of goalie Dave Caruso. With the Devils seemingly headed into the locker room down only one, a neutral zone turnover led to a 3-2 rush for Philadelphia and a one-timer by Ross that made the score 2-0 with just two seconds remaining in the period.
It took only 1:44 of the final frame for Lowell to get on the scoreboard, as Alexander Vasyunov notched his first goal in North America. The speedy winger rushed through center ice and split the defense before throwing a backhander under the glove of Jean-Sebastien Aubin.
The Devils' struggles while up a man continued as they failed to tie the game despite over three consecutive minutes on the man-advantage midway through the third. Lowell would finish the contest 0-for-8 on the power play.
Philadelphia, however, would notch their only power goal in seven opportunities at 10:31 of the third to push their lead back to two goals. It was Ross gathering his second of the night, banging home a loose puck lying free in the crease.
Caruso stopped 33 of 36 in the loss, while Aubin turned aside all but one of the 32 he faced.
