WORCESTER, Mass. - Ryan Vesce scored with 56.2 seconds left in overtime to give the Worcester Sharks a 3-2 win over the Lowell Devils on Thursday at the DCU Center. The best-of-seven series is now tied, 1-1, as it heads to Lowell on Saturday for Game 3 of the Atlantic Division Semifinal.
Looking up at 2-0 deficit late in the third, the Devils needed only nine seconds for a torrid comeback that evened the score and forced an eventual overtime. Lowell cut the lead in half with 4:31 left in regulation when Brad Mills got the puck to the point for a Tyler Eckford one-timer that found space on the left side of the net.
On the ensuing faceoff, Brad Snetsinger took the puck into the Worcester zone and unleashed a slapshot that bounced off the leg pad of goalie Alex Stalock right to the stick of Patrick Davis for the rebound goal. Last gasp efforts by both teams before the end of regulation would fail to produce the deciding marker.
With time running down in the first overtime, a turnover behind Stalock's net turned into a 3-on-2 rush for Worcester. Benn Ferriero sent a pass to the left wing to T.J. Trevelyan, who quickly fed the puck back to right circle of the Devils zone for Vesce's snapshot through the legs of Mike McKenna. It was the second overtime victory in Sharks postseason history with Vesce gathering both game-winners.
Though they never led in the first game of the series, the Sharks opened up Game 2 with a two-goal cushion after the first period of play. Derek Joslin got the offense started for Worcester at 7:36 as his shot from the far side blueline ricocheted off a stick in front and past McKenna.
Six minutes later, Worcester went up by two on another tally by a defenseman. Danny Groulx waited at the near circle for a screen from Andrew Desjardins before sending a wrist shot to top corner of the net.
McKenna took the loss with 32 saves on 35 shots. Stalock registered his first professional playoff win, turning aside 34-of-36.
