Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
FRISCO, Texas - Chris Devenski hurled 6.1 hitless innings while Colin Moran and Jio Mier combined to plate 14 runs Saturday night as Corpus Christi won by counts of 10-5 and 16-1 at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
The Hooks, riding a four-game winning streak, have outscored the RoughRiders 34-8 in the series.
Devenski (2-0) permitted just three walks and struck out eight in the finale. He started the seventh with a strikeout of Joey Gallo but was then forced to exit the game due to a pitch count of 87. Jandel Gustave entered from the pen and yielded a Jorge Alfaro single and an RBI double off the bat of Nick Williams, putting the RoughRiders on the board at 16-1. Gustave retired the next two batters to end the game.
Hooks hitters got to work quickly in Game 2. Tyler White and Jio Mier worked bases-loaded walks from Victor Payano (1-1) for a 2-0 lead.
Corpus Christi (11-4) sent 11 men to the plate in the third. Mier ignited the barrage with a three-run homer onto the berm in left. Moran added a two-run double and was promptly driven in thanks to an epic blast off the bat of Carlos Correa which landed on a street outside the ballpark.
The Hooks added four in the fourth courtesy of two more bases-loaded free passes, a wild pitch and a fielding error.
Frisco issued 15 walks on the evening.
Facing J.T. Wise, a catcher and first baseman by trade, Mier sent a two-run single into left field in the seventh, capping his six-RBI night.
In the opener, Frisco (5-10) jumped on Josh Hader for a couple of runs in the first. Corpus Christi answered by plating four in the second. Three of those tallies came on a two-out, bases-clearing double by Moran.
After the Riders pulled to within a run, the Hooks batted nine times in the third. White and Moran combined to push across four of the five runs via a double and a single, respectively. Moran's two-run knock also came with two outs.
With the Hooks up 10-4 in the fifth, Jonas Dufek relieved Hader, who had retired nine of the final 10 men he faced. Dufek, making his first appearance since the 2013 season, permitted a run on three singles and two walks.
Travis Ballew (1-1) entered in the sixth and pitched two scoreless innings to end the game.
Corpus Christi shoots for a series sweep Sunday. Lance McCullers (1-0) and Mike Hauschild (1-1) are slated to pitch for the Hooks. Frisco goes with Alec Asher (0-1) in the 4:05 start.
