April 18, 2024 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Detroit City FC News Release
DETROIT - Detroit City FC has been drawn on the road against Houston Dynamo FC of Major League Soccer in the Round of 32 of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Houston Dynamo are the current holders of the Open Cup after defeating Inter Miami 2-1 in the 2023 Open Cup final on September 27, 2023. The match will take place on either May 7th or 8th, with the kickoff time and date to be finalized.
The winner of Detroit City FC vs. Houston Dynamo in the Round of 32 will take on the winner of Indy Eleven vs. San Antonio FC in the Round of 16. Detroit City FC has a record of 1-0-1 against teams from Major League Soccer in the US Open Cup, with Le Rouge defeating the Columbus Crew 2-1 in 2022 and falling to Minnesota United FC 3-0 in 2023.
This is the first time that Detroit City FC will be on the road in the US Open Cup since losing to FC Cincinnati in the 2018 edition of the club when Le Rouge was an amateur team competing in the National Premier Soccer League and when FC Cincinnati was competing in the United Soccer League the season before making the jump up to Major League Soccer.
Le Rouge most recently reached the Round of 32, their furthest journey in the competition, in the 2022 edition of the Open Cup, where they lost to Louisville City FC in a penalty kick shootout at Keyworth Stadium.
Detroit City FC is through to the Round of 32 after defeating Michigan Stars FC of the National Independent Soccer Association in the Third Round on April 16. It was a tightly contested match, with the score knotted up at 0-0 until midfielder Maxi Rodriguez broke the deadlock in the third minute of second-half stoppage time.
