History Made: New Mexico United to Host MLS Club for the First Time Ever
April 18, 2024 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
New Mexico United News Release
Albuquerque, NM - For the first time in history, New Mexico United will host a Major League Soccer opponent, as they drew Real Salt Lake in the Round of 32 of the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The match will be played on Wednesday, May 8th at 7 PM at Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park. Tickets will go on-sale to Season Ticket Holders on Tuesday, 4/23 at noon, and to the general public 24 hours later, Wednesday, 4/24 at noon.
"When we created New Mexico United, one of our missions was to export New Mexico to the world," said United President Ron Patel. "This is an incredible opportunity to show the footballing world what New Mexicans are made of. We will battle to win this tournament - the oldest and most prestigious in America - with everything we have."
The Black & Yellow have a storied history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, with an all-time 9-3 record in the competition. That record includes a historic run to the quarterfinals in 2019. Along the way, United bested MLS competition in Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas, becoming the first club in the more than 100-year history of the tournament to make the quarterfinal in their inaugural season.
This year's Round of 32 match-up represents the first time in history that United will host an MLS club, as every match was on the road in 2019. United also played MLS's Austin FC in 2023 (also on the road.) New Mexico United has a 2-2 all-time record against MLS clubs.
