Destroyers Ready For Some Home Cooking
April 25, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Buffalo Destroyers News Release
(BUFFALO, NY)- The Buffalo Destroyers return home for the first time in almost a month as they host the Indiana Firebirds Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at the HSBC Arena. This will be the first time the two teams have played since the Firebirds moved from Albany to Indianapolis in 2001.
The Destroyers will welcome OS Gunnard Twyner back to the lineup after he was inactive for the last four weeks. Twyner leads the team with 49 receptions for 745 yards and 15 touchdowns. He ranks third in the Arena Football League averaging 15.2 yards per reception.
WR/DB Jarrail Jackson is quietly putting together an outstanding season. He is currently 10th in the league with 1,493 all-purpose yards. Jackson is on pace to become only the second player in Destroyers history to have over 2,000 all-purpose yards in a season (Lamont Cooper had 2,746 yards in 2002).
QB Bob Bees was signed off the San Jose Sabercats practice squad this week after Buffalo lost its third QB of the season to injury last week in Los Angeles. Bees spent the first 11 weeks of the season backing up 2002 Offensive Player of the Year Mark Grieb in San Jose but did not see any action. Although Bees is a newcomer, he is competing for the starting QB job with Chris Sanders and Charles Puleri.
"It's quite surprising how fast Bob has been able to pick up as much as he has," said Destroyers head coach Ron Selesky. "We have drilled him with a lot of things and he has digested the game plan pretty well.
Buffalo will bring its second ranked defense (giving up 246.8 yards per game) against one of the hottest QB's in the league. Indiana's Raymond Philyaw has thrown for 16 touchdowns and no interceptions in the last two weeks since coming back from injury. Led by DS Dwaine Carpenter, who is ranked in the league's top 10 in tackles, interceptions and pass defenses, the Destroyers defense is also ranked second in passing defense (228.4 yards a game) and fourth in scoring defense (46.8 points per game).
The Destroyers are back on the road next Thursday, May 1 to clash with the Detroit Fury at 7:30 p.m. at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Buffalo's home finale is set for Sunday, May 11 at 3:00 p.m. against the New York Dragons. Mini packs and group tickets are on sale now, call the Destroyers ticket office at 716-881-4444! Single game tickets can be purchased online at tickets.com and at all tickets.com locations including Tops Friendly Markets or by phone at 1-888-223-6000.
