New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - In a game that featured five solo home runs, the New Jersey Jackals saw their season-long six-game winning streak snapped by the first-place Pittsfield Colonials in a 7-4 loss on Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.
In his third start with New Jersey, left-hander Jayson Miller cruised through the first four innings. After allowing his first hit of the contest in the second frame, Miller retired nine consecutive batters before Pittsfield left fielder Rafael Cabreja led off the fifth inning with his fourth homer of the season. The Colonials added two more runs in the frame on an RBI triple to left by catcher Scott Knazek and a Quentin Davis sacrifice fly to take a 3-0 lead.
New Jersey broke through against Pittsfield starter Trevor Marcotte, a former Jackal, in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jeff Grose scored on a Dan Betteridge ground out after a one-out walk to make it 3-1.
But Cabreja struck again in the top of the sixth, lifting his second solo shot of the night after Danny Bomback had singled and scored on a throwing error by catcher Dean Forthun as Pittsfield built a 5-1 advantage.
After New Jersey right fielder Kevin Clark led off the sixth with his seventh home run of the season, hobbled designated hitter Jovan Rosa, who was forced into the lineup in an emergency situation despite missing the past six games with a quad injury that has caused him to miss 17 contests this season, provided an unexpected source of power when he unleashed his second home run of the season into the trees in left field in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull the Jackals within two at 5-3.
However, Pittsfield used a trio of extra-base hits in the top of the ninth to plate a pair of insurance runs courtesy of RBI doubles from Bomback and league batting leader Daniel Carte following a leadoff triple by Davis.
First baseman Jacob Butler led off the bottom of the ninth with his league-leading 12th home run of the year, but Pittsfield closer Juan Padilla escaped the jam in a non-save situation to help the Colonials to their sixth win in their last eight outings.
In the win, Pittsfield first baseman Jerod Edmondson went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 20 games. Miller (1-1) allowed five runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings to take the loss while Marcotte (4-3) turned in his sixth quality start in seven outings, yielding there runs on six hits in six innings.
The Jackals (6-4 second half, 25-31 overall) and Colonials (8-3, 28-30) continue their four-game weekend series on Friday at 7:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium. New Jersey will send 25-year-old right-hander Chris Vasami (1-0, 2.45) to the mound for his first professional start against Pittsfield righty Miguel Flores (4-3, 4.41). Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com .
