Despite 46 Shots, Omaha Blanked in Des Moines 6-0

Des Moines, IA - Patrick Kirtland scored two goals and added an assist and Jason Kasdorf registered a season-high 46 saves as the Des Moines Buccaneers blanked the Omaha Lancers 6-0 Wednesday evening at Buccaneer Arena. Following the setback, the Lancers dipped to 9-7-1 on the year and are now 0-3 against the Buccaneers this season.

Des Moines grabbed the game's opening marker less than four minutes into period one when Ray Pigozzi slipped behind the Lancers defense before chipping his second goal of the season up and over the glove hand of Lancers goaltender Alex Lyon. Ethan Prow and Connor Varley earned assists on the even strength goal scored 3:44 into the opening period. The goal marked the seventh time in 14 games this season that the Buccaneers have scored first and the eighth time in 17 games this season that Omaha has surrendered the game's first goal. Des Moines then doubled its lead with just over five minutes remaining in the period when Cameron Yarwood won a battle for a loose puck in the Omaha goal crease before sending in his first career USHL goal. Mac Olson grabbed the only assist on the five-on-five goal notched 14:59 into the period.

The Buccaneers separated themselves in the second period as Des Moines scored three times in a 9:05 span. First, Kirtland tallied his first goal of the game and fourth of the season 9:20 into the middle period with a one-timer from the right wing. Varley and Anthony Greco assisted on the even strength tally. Des Moines stretched its lead to 4-0 12:39 into the middle stanza when Garrett Allen scored on a backdoor one-timer from Cal Decowski. Kirtland grabbed the secondary assist on the goal, which marked the end of the evening in goal for Lyon who was lifted in favor of Thatcher Demko after 15 saves on 19 shots. The Buccaneers capped their frenetic second period 18:25 into the frame when Kirtland landed his second goal of the game and sixth of the year.

Des Moines landed the final nail in the coffin 17:42 into the final period when Justin Hussar blasted in his fifth goal of the season. Chad McDonald and Matt Hansen assisted on the game's final strike.

Kasdorf earned the victory in goal for the Buccaneers after 46 saves on 46 Lancers shots. The shutout was Kasdorf's second of the season and the first-year netminder is now 5-4-1 on the year and 3-0 head-to-head against the Lancers. Meanwhile, Lyon suffered the setback after 15 saves on 19 shots. Demko earned a no-decision after 15 saves on 17 shots.

The Lancers are back in action Friday evening when Omaha's 3-game holiday week continues in Dubuque with a 7:05 PM showdown against the Fighting Saints.
