Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Ed McGovern is starting to have a real knack for scoring big goals. Last Saturday, his goal with just three seconds left in the second period tied the game for the Herd as they eventually went on to win 4-2. His blast 1:19 into overtime Wednesday night lifted the Stampede to a 3-2 victory over Fargo at the Sioux Falls Arena. It was the third straight win for the Herd who improved to 7-5-1 on the season. Kyle Rankin scored twice while Charlie Lindgren stopped 29 shots to earn his third straight victory in goal.
The Stampede grabbed the first goal of the game 14:19 into the period when Kyle Rankin tallied his fifth goal of the season. Bryan Moore brought the puck into the Fargo zone and slid a pass to the left circle where Rankin was able to bat it past Force goaltender Zane Gothberg to give the Stampede a 1-0 lead. The Herd and Fargo both tallied 11 shots in the period.
The Herd took a two goal lead at 6:29 when Rankin tallied his second of the night. Ed McGovern fired a shot from the left point that was stopped by Gothberg, but Rankin was inside the left circle, picked up the loose puck and fired it into the back of the net. The Force responded six minutes later when Colton Hargrove found the back of the net. On a nice 2-on-1 break, Austin Farley slid the puck across the slot to Hargrove who put the puck through the pads of Stampede goaltender Charlie Lindgren to make it a 2-1 game.
It would remain 2-1 late into the third period and even into the final seconds as Fargo would force overtime with just 33 seconds remaining. With the goaltender pulled, Austin Farley picked up a loose puck in the right circle and blasted a shot through traffic and past Lindgren to put the game into overtime.
In the extra session the Herd made sure to end things early. Austyn Young brought the puck into the Fargo zone and dropped it back at the left point for McGovern who teed off and blasted the puck into the upper right hand corner of the net to send the 2,640 in attendance home happy before Thanksgiving.
The Stampede were outshot by Fargo 31 to 30 on the night. The Herd finished 0 for 6 on the powerplay while Fargo was 0 for 3. The Stampede will return to action Friday night when they host the Lincoln Stars at 7:05 PM.
