Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - It took a few minutes of extra time, but the Fighting Saints were able to grab two points in the season-series-opener against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Wednesday night.
After a back and forth start to the first period, the Fighting Saints were able to strike first. On the powerplay, Eliot Grauer centered a pass to Gerard Hanson, who one-timed it past Matt McNeely to give the Fighting Saints a 1-0 advantage. Teddy Doherty got credit for the secondary assist on the goal. With just two-and-a-half minutes remaining in the frame, Zemgus Girensons corralled a rebound of a Grauer shot and fired it into the back of the net to push the score to 2-0. Fighting Saints affiliate list player Jarrid Privitera, playing in his first USHL game, got credit for the other assist.
The Fighting Saints dominated the shot totals during the second period, outshooting Cedar Rapids 13-7, but it was the RoughRiders registering the only tally of the period. After Gabe Antoni could not snare a rebound of a Riley Bourbonais shot, Ian Brady slid the puck into the open net to bring the RoughRiders within one.
With under six minutes to go in the third period, Cedar Rapids tied the game. Tanner Pond fed the puck to Dylan Gareau, whose persistent pressure at the netfront resulted in the second Cedar Rapids goal of the night. Neither team was able to score in the remaining regulation time, and the game headed to overtime.
With just 1:12 left in overtime, TJ Moor brought the puck up the right wing boards. He fed it back to his linemate Tyler Lundey, who fired it just inside the left post to give the Fighting Saints the win.
Wednesday's game was the first of three games that the Fighting Saints will play over four days. After taking a break for Thanksgiving, the team will host the Omaha Lancers on Friday. On Saturday, the Fighting Saints will travel to Des Moines to play at Buccaneer Arena for the only time this season.
