NLL Calgary Roughnecks

Desert Storm Blows Away Riggers

March 17, 2007 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Calgary Roughnecks News Release

It was not a happy debut for Jeff Dowling, new head coach of the Calgary Roughnecks.

Dowling, who was brought in a week ago to replace the axed Chris Hall, could only stand and watch as his charges were bitten 10-14 by the hometown Arizona Sting.

The Roughnecks fall to 5-5 and 3rd spot in the NLL's West Division. The Sting (6-4) sit comfortably in 2nd, while Colorado leads the way at 9-1.

Calgary had a 2-1 advantage at the end of the 1st quarter, but never got back into the game after trailing 6-3 at the half.

"On the night we were beaten by the better team," said General Manager Kurt Silcott.

"Our offence had their chances but kept shooting into (goalie Rob) Blasdell's belly, and to compound our problems, the defence had far too many lapses."

He added, "Plain and simple, we got outplayed."

To rub salt into the wound, Blasdell closed Arizona's scoring with a shot that traveled the whole length of the field into an empty net.

Once again, the bulk of Calgary's scoring came from the Trio Grande - Tracey Kelusky (3g, 2a), Kaleb Toth (1g, 4a) and Lewis Ratcliff (2g, 2a).

Other Riggers to score were Jeff Moleski, Taylor Wray, Scott Ranger and Jeff Shattler.

Giant Dan Dawson once again spearheaded the Arizona offence with nine points (2g, 7a). He was ably supported by Derek Malawsky (3g, 2a), Lindsey Plunkett (3g, 1a) and Craig Conn (2g, 5a).

In a messy game with innumerable penalties, the Roughnecks went 3-8 on the power play, while holding the Sting to 2-7 while a man down.
