Derrick Byars Returns to Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, March 5, 2014 - The Bakersfield Jam have acquired forward Derrick Byars, it was announced today. This will be Byars' fourth stint with Bakersfield, as he has previously played for the Jam during the 2008-09, 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.
Byars (6-7, 220, Vanderbilt) has appeared in a 104 games with Bakersfield and holds career averages of 17.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 35.3 minutes. During his time with the Jam, he was a NBA D-League All-Star selection (2009), was named All-NBA D-League Second Team (2009), participated in a D-League Slam Dunk Competition at All-Star Weekend (2011), and received an All-NBA D-League Honorable Mention (2011). In addition, Byars received a NBA GATORADE Call-Up to the San Antonio Spurs in 2012.
A Memphis, TN-native, Byars was originally drafted by the Portland Trailblazers in the second round (42nd overall) of the 2007 NBA Draft, and was then traded to the Philadelphia 76ers on draft night. The 29 year-old has participated in NBA training camps with the Philadelphia 76ers (2007), Oklahoma City Thunder (2008), Chicago Bulls (2009), Miami Heat (2011), and the Memphis Grizzlies (2013). He has also played professionally in Greece, France, Germany and Puerto Rico.
Byars split his collegiate career between the University of Virginia (2002-04) and Vanderbilt University (2005-07). As a senior he was named SEC Player of the Year after averaging 17.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 34 games for the Commodores.
To make room on the roster, the Jam have waived guard Anthony Harris.
Byars will wear number 4 and is expected to be in uniform for tonight's game when the Jam visit the Texas Legends at 5:00 p.m. PST.
