Winnipeg, Manitoba -- Brandon Wheat Kings' prospect Jordan DePape has been chosen the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Top Rookie for the 2008-2009 season.

Brandon's third round pick in the 2007 Western Hockey League bantam draft, DePape was recognized by MJHL Commissioner Kim Davis before the Saints game Sunday night against Swan Valley.

DePape, who turns 17 next month, has enjoyed an outstanding freshman season with the Addison Division leading Saints. A product of Winnipeg's minor hockey system, DePape is leading all rookie scorers with thirty-one goals and 78 points. DePape has also excelled at the national level, playing a key role for Team Western at December's World Under 17 Hockey Challenge in Port Alberni, British Columbia.

In winning the award, DePape edged out another Brandon prospect, Brendan Walker of the Portage Terriers.

While DePape was recognized as the league's top rookie, 18-year old Scott Macaulay of the Saints was named top defenceman.

On the ice, DePape scored four times Sunday night in the Saints' 8-1 win over the Stampeders.
