Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- The Defenders continued to play superlative baseball as they edged out the visiting Harrisburg Senators as they took three out of four games with a win on Monday, 5-3.

For the third straight day, the Sens got on the board first as they manufactured a run in the very first frame. Mike Daniel led off with a double, Marco Yepez bunted him over to third and Garrett Guzman delivered a sacrifice fly to left to give Harrisburg a 1-0 advantage.

Connecticut would take their first lead of the game in an eventful third inning. Dave Maroul led off with a slap double to the left-centerfield gap. Jake Wald came up next and tapped a grounder to the left side of the infield but the ball was thrown wide at third to score Maroul on the error. Joey Martinez laid down a sac bunt and Brad Boyer hit a ground ball to first to score Wald from third to give the Defs a 2-1 lead.

Defenders' starter Joey Martinez was spectacular in the middle innings, retiring 13 in order at one point as he recorded ground ball out afer ground ball out.

The Defs added another run in the seventh inning as Kyle Haines ripped a single up the middle to plate Jake Wald as Connecticut got a little more comfortable, 3-1.

Steve Palazzolo struggled in relief of Martinez in the bottom of the eighth. Palazzolo allowed two runs on two base hits and two wild pitches to tie the game at 3-3.

Connecticut wasted little time at the 3-3 standstill as the home half of the eighth began with a spray single to left off the bat of Carlos Sosa. Hitless in the series was Travis Ishikawa coming into his at-bat in the eighth, but he came up huge. Ishikawa pulled a double down the right field line to score Sosa as the Defenders re-claimed a 4-3 lead. Adam Witter would later single in Ishikawa to make it 5-3.

Sergio Romo came in to pitch the ninth and was back to his old tricks. He faced the minimum and picked up his ninth save in ten tries to lock down the game for the Defenders.

Connecticut will travel to New Britain for a three-game set against their inter-state rival. The Defenders will come home on Friday, May 30th to take on the Binghamton Mets over the weekend.
