Altoona Curve News Release
ALTOONA - The Altoona Curve were unable to overcome an early surge by the Eastern League's top team on Memorial Day at Blair County Ballpark as the Trenton Thunder bested the Curve 7-2. The loss is the third in a row for Altoona and sends the Curve to a season-low 15 games under .500 with a 16-31 overall record.
Starter Yoslan Herrera (3-5) allowed five runs on eight hits over five innings of work. Trenton grabbed a trio of runs in the first inning, as the Thunder pounded out four hits to take a 3-0 advantage. Herrera would allow single runs in the second and third inning before tossing a pair of scoreless frames.
The Curve offense struggled again, as the only Altoona scores came by way of a throwing error from Trenton catcher Joe Muich that allowed Anthony Webster, who was attempting to steal third base, to score the Curve's first run in the second inning. Webster then drove in the Curve's second run in the fourth with an RBI single that plated Brad Corley. Webster's hit drew the Curve within three runs to make it a 5-2 deficit.
Reliever Juan Mateo tossed two scoreless innings of relief before giving way to Dave Davidson in the eighth. Davidson did not allow a run in the eighth, but Trenton scored two more insurance runs off the Curve southpaw in the top of the ninth to extend their lead to 7-2.
Pittsburgh Pirates' shortstop Jack Wilson played in his seventh minor league rehab game with the Altoona Curve and served as the Curve's designated hitter. Wilson singled and walked in two plate appearances before leaving the game as scheduled.
Overall in seven Double-A games, Wilson went 6-for-19 (.316) at the plate with four walks, one hit by pitch and one run scored. In the field, he started at shortstop in six of seven games with Altoona and recorded 23 assists, eight putouts and committed two errors.
The Curve will hit the road for a six-game road trip starting Tuesday as they'll take on the E.L. Southern Division leading Bowie Baysox at 7:05 p.m. Altoona will turn to right-hander Josh Hill (3-5, 4.33) to stop the three-game skid, while Bowie righty Brad Bergesen (5-0, 1.85) will start for the Baysox. Radio coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. with the Curve GameDay Show presented by the Hotel Belmar and Budget Beverage on flagship station WHPA-FM, 93.5 and the Curve Radio Network.
