3BAerodynamics...
Missed Opportunities (Again)...For the second day in a row the Aeros could not come up with key hits to drive in runners early on in an 8-1 loss to Erie yesterday. Akron worked Erie starter Luke French for a single and a walk with one out in the bottom of the first, but the left-hander recovered to strike out both 3B Wes Hodges and RF Stephen Head and get out of the inning. The Aeros then misfired in the second despite getting three hits in the inning, as LF Ryan Goleski grounded sharply into a double play and C Armando Camacaro over-ran third base with two away and was tagged out to close the frame. In the bottom of the third Akron put men at first and second with two away but French got Head on a fly to right to end the inning, starting a string in which he would retire eight in a row. By the time the Aeros had another base runner they were down 5-0 and the damage had been done.
Clearing the Bases...One Aero who always seems to take advantage of men on the base paths is 3B Wes Hodges. He leads the Eastern League with 40 RBI in just 46 games, and is hitting .396 (21-53) with runners in scoring position. Hodges has been especially hot this month, hitting .352 (25-71) with a team-leading 20 RBI (Chris Gimenez is second with nine) in 21 games. While Hodges has not hit a home run since May 4th, the native of Chattanooga, TN, does have an RBI in seven of his last nine games, with eight RBI over that span. Hodges is on pace for 123 RBI this season, which would annihilate the current franchise record of 96 set in 1997 by Chan Perry. At the start of the season, Hodges was tabbed by Baseball America as the no.-4 prospect in the Cleveland organization after hitting .288 with 15 home runs and 71 RBI last season at Kinston.
Nothing But a G Thing...1B Chris Gimenez became the second Aeros hitter to record a double-digit hitting streak yesterday, as his infield single in the bottom of the eighth extended his current run to 10 straight games. The native of Gilroy, CA is hitting .364 (12-33) over his streak, with eight runs scored, six RBI, and a ridiculous .488 on-base percentage thanks to eight walks. Gimenez leads the Aeros with 30 walks this season, and entering play today ranks second in the league with a .450 OBP. He opened this season with a 16-game on base streak, and has reached base via either a hit or a walk in 32 of the 34 games he has played this year.
Did You Know...This is David Huff's first start against a team not named the Altoona Curve in exactly one month (4/26 vs. Harrisburg). Huff has made his last three starts against the Curve and took full advantage, allowing just two runs and 11 hits in 21 innings. This is his first start of the season against Erie.
