
Defenseman Scheffelmaier Reassigned Back to Worcester

Peoria, Ill. (February 15, 2004) â Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Jason Christie of the Peoria Rivermen of the ECHL announced today that second-year defenseman Brett Scheffelmaier has been reassigned back to the team's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate â the Worcester IceCats â by the NHL's St. Louis Blues.
Scheffelmaier â a 6-foot-5, 222-pound native of Coronation, Alberta â competed in four games with 16 penalty minutes (PIM) in his second reassignment with the Rivermen. He has participated in 11 games for Worcester this season with one assist and 23 PIM, which include three fighting majors. During his first reassignment with the Rivermen from December 10 to December 21, the 22-year-old posted three points (1g, 2a) and five (5) PIM in six games; he notched his first professional goal on December 12 against Johnstown at Carver Arena.
As a rookie in 2002-2003, Scheffelmaier finished third on the IceCats with 143 PIM, while ranking fifth among AHL rookies and tied for fifth among AHL defensemen with 17 major penalties. He was originally selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the third round (75th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He re-entered the draft and was selected by St. Louis in the fifth round (190th overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
Scheffelmaier enjoyed a five-year Major Junior "A" hockey career with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League (WHL), averaging nearly four (4) PIM (3.89) per game over 273 games.
On Monday, February 16, the Rivermen face off against the rival Johnstown Chiefs in the first of two in a row between the clubs. Game time is 6:00 p.m. CT at the Cambria County War Memorial. The Peoria Rivermen are a member of the ECHL â America's Premier "AA" Hockey League.
