Defense Comes Through in Sweep and Sixth Straight Win

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts finished a four-game sweep of the Grand Prairie AirHogs and won their sixth game in a row with a 3-1 win at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Monday night.
Four Wingnuts pitchers combined to allow one earned run, with Sean Teague battling through 5.1 scoreless to earn the win.
Ryan Patterson's solo home run in the bottom of the first set the tone for the game as the Wingnuts never trailed at any point in the game.
Greg Porter led off the second with a single and advanced to second when Michael Hollimon reached on an error by shortstop Josh Horn. Teague induced a double play off the bat of Robert Perry and then stranded the tying run on first by striking out Chris Brown.
Teague was helped by another defensive play in the third when Jeff Christy ended the inning by throwing out Thomas Incaviglia trying to steal third base.
Patterson came up big on defense in the fourth. With the Wingnuts still leading 1-0, David Espinosa doubled to left-center against Teague. Porter singled to center and Patterson threw Espinosa out at the plate as the tying run. Teague retired Hollimon on a groundball to end the inning. The AirHogs loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth before Teague got Aaron Garza to line out to left field.
Dustin Pease relieved Teauge in the top of the sixth with a runner on first and one out. Pease hit Hollimon to put the go-ahead runner on base, but came back to strike out Perry for the second out. A double steal by Porter and Hollimon moved the tying and lead runs into scoring position when Pease retired Brown on a flyout to center to end the inning.
Michael Bell's hit and run single in the bottom of the sixth advanced Steve Pearson to third with one out. Rene Ruiz hit a comebacker to reliever Ben Paxton who threw to second for the force on Bell. David Espinosa's relay back to first to try and complete the potential double play went wild into foul territory and allowed Pearson to score the Wingnuts' second run.
An infield single and an error by Ruiz in the top of the seventh put the tying runs on base with one out, but Pease ended the inning on a groundball double play ball hit by Garza.
The AirHogs finally got on the board in the eighth when Greg Porter hit a solo home run off of Cephas Howard. The Wingnuts returned the favor in the bottom half when Mario Delgado crushed a home run just inside the right field foul poul off of Rod Scurry Jr. Delgado was nearly hit in the face with the previous pitch.
Justin Dowdy, working for the fifth time in six games, pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 14th save of the year.
Teague earned the win, allowing five hits in 5.1 IP with four strikeouts and four walks. Patrick Stanley took the loss for the AirHogs, allowing one earned run in three innings. Jorge Cortes extended his hitting streak to nine games in a row.
