Connecticut Defenders News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT- With the last visit for the Defenders to New Britain Stadium for the '09 regular season, Connecticut wanted to make it special. The Defenders (51-35) rode the arm of southpaw Jesse English to a 6-0 shutout victory over New Britain and wrapped up the series with a 3-1 record.
Connecticut drummed up a two out rally in the second inning with a base hit by 2B-Brock Bond who raced home on a CF-Mike McBryde RBI double to left center. That was all the Defenders would need to seal a record of 5-2 on a six day road-trip as well as a 9-1 record at New Britain Stadium.
The night truly belonged to LHP-Jesse English (6-5) who delivered his best performance of the '09 season. English scattered six hits, walked a pair and struck out a season high seven while retiring ten in a row in his first complete game shutout of his young career.
The Defenders gave English all the support he needed with another lone run in the fifth but had their biggest output in the sixth, plating three runs off reliever RHP-Carlos Guttierez. RF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve leadoff with a double, DH-Witter ripped a one out RBI double, SS-Brandon Crawford hit an RBI single, C-Jackson Williams followed suit with another RBI double and Connecticut had a 5-0 lead before adding a lone run in the eighth. Connecticut saw 8 out of 9 starters each contribute a hit.
Rock Cats' starter, RHP-Matt Fox (6-4) suffered his second loss to Connecticut in four starts allowing two earned runs off of five hits, walked three and fanned four.
Connecticut heads home to Dodd Stadium for the final four game series prior to the All Star break as they welcome the Trenton Thunder (Yankees) into town.
Friday is a Thunderstix giveaway to the first 1000 kids 12 and under courtesy of Putnam Bank as well as the kick-off of Goodwill Weekend. Dodd Stadium will be a dropping area for fans to support the community and bring donations to help Goodwill. The night will conclude with the best fireworks show in Southeastern CT.
