Evening the Score...The Aeros took game two of this three-game series against Reading last night by a final of 4-0 in front of 2,324 fans at Canal Park. Starter Josh Tomlin (9-5) and reliever Josh Judy were near spotless in limiting the Phillies to just three hits and two walks a night after Reading pounded out 14 hits and eight walks in an 11-7 triumph. Akron got on the board in the bottom of the first inning as Cristo Arnal doubled, stole third and scored on an RBI groundout by LF Nick Weglarz. The Aeros tacked on three more runs in the fifth when an error by Reading third baseman Carlos Leon allowed a run to score and gave Akron an extra out, and C Carlos Santana capitalized with a two-strike, two-out, two-run single to provide the final margin.
Tomlin's Toil...Josh Tomlin made one of his finest starts of the season last night, holding Reading to only three hits and a pair of walks while striking out six in seven shutout innings. It was the third straight quality start for the native of Whitehouse, TX, and he is now 4-1 with a 2.29 ERA in his past six appearances (five starts) with 24 strikeouts against just five walks in 35.1 innings. Over the previous two seasons the Texas Tech product had made 30 starts in 73 outings, going 20-9 with a 3.21 ERA in time spent between Lake County, Kinston and Buffalo. This season, back to his original role as a starting pitcher, Tomlin leads the Aeros in starts (15), innings (88.1) and strikeouts (75), and now leads the entire Indians organization with nine wins.
System Shutout...Last night's performance was Akron's 11th shutout of the season through only 86 games, and the sixth in the past 32 tries for the club. What makes the number even more impressive is that the Aeros recorded only 10 shutouts all last season in 150 games (counting the playoffs). The Aeros have now allowed two runs or less in 40 out of the 86 games this season, and the pitching staff's team ERA of 3.17 is the best in both the Eastern League and all of Double-A baseball (the Birmingham Barons of the Southern League are second at 3.24).
Take a Beau...Patrolling first base for the 80th time this season, Beau Mills was the leader offensively for Akron last night in the victory as he finished 3-4 for his team-leading 24th multi-hit game. He is slightly off the pace of last year's multi-hit champion Wes Hodges, who had 41 such performances in 133 games for the Aeros. Mills, who will participate along with tonight's starter Jeanmar Gomez in the 2009 Eastern League All-Star Game in Trenton, NJ, is now batting .283 in his past 41 games.
News and Notes...In his first start for Class AAA Columbus yesterday RHP Hector Rondon worked six no-hit innings against Indianapolis with two walks and eight strikeouts, earning the win in a 2-1 victory for the Clippers. Former Aero Trevor Crowe collected an RBI double in the third while extending his hitting streak to 14 games. LHP Chuck Lofgren, who like Rondon began the year in the Aeros rotation, started for Columbus today and blanked Indianapolis for seven innings in a 9-0 whitewash.
