Connecticut Defenders News Release

BINGHAMTON, NY- Orlando Hernandez stumbled through a re-hab inning with the B-Mets as the Defenders de-railed Binghamton at NYSEG Stadium, 9-5.

El Duque was touched up immediately in the first when Ben Copeland drew a two-out walk. Pablo Sandoval proceeded to rip a double to the alleyway to score the speedy Copeland from first. Adam Witter laced a double of his own to plate Sandoval as the Defs took a 2-0 lead.

Connecticut scored again in the second as Kyle Haines crossed the plate on a passed ball. The Defenders kept the pressure on the Mets as they had a sizeable third.

Sandoval led off the inning with a solo bomb off the scoreboard, Adam Witter got aboard on an infield single, Eddy Martinez-Esteve singled and Carlos Sosa drew a walk to load the bags. Fresh off his All-Star game 2-for-2 performance, Olmo Rosario lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Witter and two batters later fellow All-Star Kyle Haines singled Martinez-Esteve home to make it 6-0 Defs.

The Mets would battle back in the fourth when Ambiorix Concepcion was gifted a leadoff triple. Emmanuel Garcia drove him home with one out to nibble the lead down to 6-1.

Binghamton would continue feasting on the large deficit in the fifth when Mike Carp brought a run across on a sac fly. Concepcion belted a two-run shot to left as the advantage shrunk to 6-4.

The Mets turned a leadoff infield single by Dan Murphy in the bottom of the seventh into a run when left-handed reliever Paul Oseguera air-mailed a throw to third into the stands. Murphy scored and the once large lead was cut down to 6-5.

Connecticut put their worries to rest in the top of the eighth. Sandoval doubled to get things going, Witter laid an infield bunt single down the third base line and Martinez-Esteve lashed a base knock to left to score Sandoval. Antoan Richardson took over running duty for Martinez-Esteve and his speed came in handy. Carlos Sosa would bunt both runners into scoring position and Simon Klink delivered a two-run single in a pinch-hit role to make it 9-5 Defenders.

Garrett Broshuis earned his tenth win, Hernandez lost his re-hab stint, and the Defs got their road trip off to a good start.

The Defenders and Mets will square off on Friday night at 7:05pm. Tune into all the action starting with the AT&T Real Yellow Pages Pre-Game Show at 6:50pm at ctdefenders.com or on the Defenders Radio Network.
