Altoona Curve News Release
ALTOONA- Summer is moving along rapidly and at the end of the Curve's upcoming July 17-24 homestand at Blair County Ballpark only 16 home games will remain in the 2008 season. The good news is that the Curve are home for the next eight consecutive days starting Thursday evening and plenty of great ballpark events and promotions are on tap.
On the field, the Curve will face the top two clubs in the Eastern League's Southern Division as the Harrisburg Senators (Nationals) and Akron Aeros (Indians) will provide the opposition during the homestand. Altoona and Harrisburg will play a four-game series from Thursday through Sunday, while the division-leading Akron Aeros will take on the Curve in a five-game set over four days from Monday through next Thursday, July 24. Among the five games between the Curve and Aeros will be a 5:35 p.m. doubleheader on Monday.
The promotional slate for the July 17-24 Curve homestand will kick off with one of the most popular traveling acts in sports entertainment visting Blair County Ballpark for Thursday's 7:05 p.m. game vs. Harrisburg. The fun and energetic Zooperstars, featuring characters like "Clammy Sosa", "Shark McGwire", "Harry Canary" and "Pee Wee Geese", will entertain fans attending Thursday's game. Their appearance is presented by Smuckers. Another popular traveling act, The Amazing Christopher, will once again bring his fun, high-energy act to BCB next Tuesday, July 22nd at 7:05 p.m. against Akron.
Fireworks are always prevalent during the summer months at BCB and this homestand will be no exception. Fans will be able to enjoy spectacular fireworks shows following action on Friday at 7:05 p.m. (presented by Chrysler-Jeep) and Sunday at 6:05 p.m. (presented by Ramada Altoona).
A pair of collectible giveaways are on tap for the upcoming homestand, as the Curve will present the first two of their six Tenth Anniversary Team Photoball giveaways. The first 2,000 fans attending the Saturday, July 19th game will receive the first Photoball, featuring Zach Duke and Adam Hyzdu, courtesy of East Coast Gun Sales. On Wednesday the 23rd, the first 2,000 fans will take home the second collectible Photoball, featuring Curve Tenth Anniversary Team members Matt Capps and Jack Wilson, presented by Allied Milk Producers.
Two unique giveaways will take place during Sunday's 6:05 p.m. game vs. Harrisburg. The Curve will send one lucky winner and a guest to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina as part of the club's "Myrtle Beach Future Pirates Trip Giveaway". The winning fan will receive airfare for two, hotel accommodations and two tickets to see the Lynchburg Hillcats (Pirates' Class-A affiliate) take on the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Saturday, August 2nd. Following Sunday's game, the Curve will unveil their previously-postponed "Money Drop" promotion. Fans attending Sunday's game can sign up throughout the night to participate in the post-game contest, and 10 lucky fans will scramble for $1,000 cash, which will be dropped from a helicopter.
The Curve will hope to make some headlines during Monday's 5:35 p.m. doubleheader against the Akron Aeros, when they hope to paid a visit by a Hollywood comedy giant. Monday is "Please Come to Altoona Will Ferrell!" Night at Blair County Ballpark, as Hollywood mega-star Will Ferrell will toss out a ceremonial first pitch, broadcast an inning on radio and sign autographs for Curve fans. Actually, the odds of any of that happening are extraordinarily slim, but the Curve are hereby begging Mr. Ferrell to accept their invitation. Either way, the Curve will play video clips from his hilarious performances in "Anchorman", "Old School" and many other films.
The homestand will end with a "splash" next Thursday afternoon at 12:05, when the Curve present their annual "Super Splash Day" at Blair County Ballpark. The event is sponsored by the Altoona City Water Authority. Fun, water-related activities will take place throughout the game and fans will be invited to sit in the "Splash Zone", where they will be periodically drenched by water.
Weekends are always filled with fun, family activities and this weekend will be no different. Following the Friday, Saturday and Sunday games, kids are invited to Run the Bases courtesy of Thomas Chevrolet of Bedford. In addition, prior to Sunday's 6:05 p.m. game, Curve fans are invited to participate in a pre-game catch from approximately 5-5:30. The family promotions aren't just confined to the weekends, though. Monday's 5:35 p.m. doubleheader against Akron is another Ponderosa Steakhouse Family Four-Pack Monday. Families of four will receive four regular hot dogs, four small sodas and four tickets for just $40.
