Carmona Returns to Canal Park Saturday

July 17, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

AKRON, OH - Cleveland Indians pitcher Fausto Carmona will make a rehab start for the Aeros against the Erie SeaWolves Saturday night at Canal Park. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. as Carmona continues to rehab a left hip strain that forced him to the Major League disabled list May 24th. Carmona spent the second half of 2003 and the first half of 2004 at Canal Park, playing with the Aeros before developing into the pitcher that took the American League by storm in 2007.

Carmona made his first rehab start Monday for Class A Lake County and pitched well, surrendering just a double in four innings of work, and even tossed a short bullpen session after the outing. The right-hander opened the season with solid numbers in Cleveland, going 4-2 with a 3.10 ERA and turned in six quality starts in 10 games, including a complete game shutout May 12th against Toronto at Progressive Field. This is the sinker-baller's first career stint on the DL.

The Indians signed Carmona out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in December of 2000. He is 24-20 with a 3.57 ERA in his big-league career over 80 games (49 starts). A season ago, Carmona was 19-8 with a 3.06 ERA and 137 strikeouts in 215 innings for the Tribe, finishing 4th in the American League Cy Young voting. He also made three playoff starts, going 0-1 with a 6.60 ERA against the Yankees and Red Sox. He tossed nine innings in Game Two of the American League Division Series, and allowed just a run on three hits on five strikeouts. In his Aeros career, he is 10-13 with a 4.50 ERA and 121 strikeouts in 30 starts.

The Aeros continue this four-game homestand Friday at 7:05 p.m. against the SeaWolves. Left-hander Ryan Edell (5-5, 4.30 ERA) gets the start for the Aeros against Erie's Lauren Gagnier (0-1, 108.00 ERA). It will be Fireworks Night at Canal Park with a post-game display, synched to music, presented by Time Warner Cable. The game broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at (330) 253-5151.
