Boston Breakers News Release
The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) has announced the official list of U.S. Women's National Team allocated players for the 2016 NWSL regular season. One U.S. player has been allocated to the Boston Breakers: defender Whitney Engen. U.S. Soccer will be subsidizing the salaries of their respective players.
Engen, 28, was a member of the U.S. Women's National Team that won the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada. The Rolling Hills Estates, Calif. native has been capped 29 times and has scored four goals for the U.S. In 2014, her third year with the U.S., Engen had a breakout year, playing 1,051 minutes in 13 games while starting 11. She scored two goals, finding the net against Mexico and Guatemala at the 2014 CONCACAF Women's Championship, where she helped the U.S. secure its berth in the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.
In 2015, with the Western New York Flash, Engen played every minute of all 12 matches she appeared in. She previously played for the Houston Dash (2014), and for Liverpool LFC under Breakers head coach Matt Beard, helping to lead Liverpool LFC to its first-ever FA Women's Super League title.
Prior to joining Liverpool, Engen played for back-to-back Damallsvenskan champions Tyreso (2011, 2012), the Western New York Flash (2011, Women's Professional Soccer), and the Chicago Red Stars (2010, WPS).
The NWSL will be holding the 2016 College Draft on Friday, Jan. 15, 2016 at 10 a.m. ET at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Convention in Baltimore. For more details, go to NWSLsoccer.com.
