Charlotte Independence News Release
(CHARLOTTE, N.C.) - Charlotte Independence announced today that defender Shalom Dutey has signed a new contract and will be returning to the club for the 2021 season, pending league and federation approval.
"It's a great feeling to be back," said Dutey. "It's been a long journey in the offseason, but I have been working hard and doing the things I need to do to get back."
Dutey, 22, first signed with the Independence prior to the Jacks' 2020 USL Championship season.
"It's great to have Shalom back for the 2021 season," said Charlotte Independence General Manager and Head Coach Mike Jeffries. "We felt like he made a lot of progress last year and it's always a huge opportunity anytime that you can sign a left-footed centre-back that is a good passer, is really strong in the air, and has tremendous athleticism. He is going to be a big plus for our group."
Dutey played collegiately for the Liberty Flames from 2016-19, notching 36 starts and 55 appearances. In the summer of 2019, the defender joined USL League Two side Charlotte Eagles where he earned All-Southern team honors.
"It's a good feeling knowing that we will playing at American Legion Memorial Stadium," added Dutey. "I have driven past the stadium since I was a kid so it's a dream to now be able to play there."
Dutey joins Jake Areman, Brandt Bronico (on loan from Charlotte FC), Clay Dimick, Junior Etou, Joel Johnson, Enzo Martinez, Brandon Miller, Austin Pack, Marcelo Palomino (on loan from Houston Dynamo FC), Hugh Roberts, Kevin Riascos, Valentin Sabella (currently loaned to Cancun FC), and Thomas de Villardi on the list of players confirmed for the 2021 season, as the club continues to negotiate with additional players.
