DeCecco Deals, Blaze Win
August 23, 2015 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
Scott DeCecco worked 4.2 no-hit innings en route to 6.2 frames of one-run ball, Tyler O'Neill hit his league-leading 30th homer of the year, and the Bakersfield Blaze used a four-run first inning to drop the San Jose Giants 6-3, winning a second game in a row at Municipal Stadium in San Jose.
Sometimes, one inning is enough, and tonight, the game was over in the span of six batters. Martin Agosta (L, 4-8), who had been throwing better for the Giants of late, struggled right out of the gate, issuing back-to-back walks to Aaron Barbosa and Rayder Ascanio to begin the game. Then, the Blaze went full force on an RBI bucket chain: Tim Lopes singled in Barbosa; Tyler O'Neill singled in Ascanio; Austin Wilson doubled in Lopes, though O'Neill was thrown out at home; and Kyle Petty grounded out to score Wilson. In six hitters, the Blaze led 4-0.
And that would be all the club would need, when this one was said and done.
Scott DeCecco (W, 2-2) used a high pitch count early, but worked through an error and a walk to keep the Giants at bay. San Jose's first hit did not occur until Tyler Horan broke up the no-hit bid in the 5th inning on a single to rightfield.
Meanwhile, the Blaze continued to add. Jay Baum and Carlton Tanabe doubled to plate a run in the 4th, and Tyler O'Neill hit a towering flyball that seemed to carry for minutes, sailing out to left for his league-best 30th shot of the year.
The Giants did not go down without a fight, though, scoring a run in the 7th after DeCecco left the game, and two more in the 9th off Grady Wood, but the Blaze fended off the competition and held on for the win.
Aaron Brooks went 1.1 innings of relief, as well.
The win moves the Blaze to a robust mark of 15-6 in the month of August, and the club finishes up the four-game road trip in a 1:00pm game on Sunday in San Jose. Dan Altavilla gets the call in a city that has given him a tough time this year, but Sunday marks another chance to exact his revenge.
Fans can listen to every pitch online at BakersfieldBlaze.com or via the TuneIn Radio app. Dan Besbris has the call.
