DeCaro Again Named CHL Goalie of the Week
January 28, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Central Hockey League today announced that Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs goaltender John DeCaro has been named the Oakley CHL Goaltender of the Week for the second time this season. DeCaro wins the award on the heels of a week in which he went two games without giving up a single goal and extended his season total to seven shutouts, which is just one shy of the CHL record.
On Friday night in Oklahoma City , DeCaro stopped all 37 Blazers shots in a 3-0 Mudbugs victory. In two starts against Oklahoma City this year, DeCaro has made a total of 78 saves in a pair of shutout victories. The Blazers haven't scored a goal against DeCaro since Dec. 3, 2006; a span of 124:13.
The 6'3", 208 pound goaltender then followed up that performance with another blanking of Rio Grande Valley on Sunday afternoon at CenturyTel Center . DeCaro turned aside 28 Killer Bees shots in a 2-0 Mudbugs win, their 17th in a row at home. That shutout was the Mudbugs' tenth of the season; a mark that ties the All-time CHL record previously shared by the 2000-01 Odessa Jackalopes and the 2004-05 Colorado Eagles. DeCaro has now posted back-to-back shutouts twice this year and will carry a personal shutout streak of exactly 120 minutes into this weekend's games in Wichita .
DeCaro holds a season record of 15-4-3 and sits just ahead of teammate Ken Carroll (the reigning CHL goalie of the Month for December) for the CHL-lead in both goals-against average (1.71) and saves percentage (.943). With seven shutouts on the year, DeCaro leads the CHL and is just one behind the league record of eight shutouts in a season by an individual goaltender. That mark has been accomplished by four different goaltenders, most recently by Colorado 's Tyler Wieman during that 04-05 season.
In his second-season out of the University of Alaska-Anchorage, DeCaro continues to rack up the awards. In addition to his two Oakley CHL Goaltender of the Week awards this year, he was named Sher-Wood CHL Goaltender of the Month for November of 2007. He also appeared in his second-straight CHL All-star game this year in Broomfield, Colorado .
The Mudbugs will be back in action with games on back-to-back nights against the Wichita Thunder on Friday and Saturday at the Kansas Coliseum. Tune in to catch all the action on 1130 AM KWKH with opening faceoff set for 7:05 pm and pre-game coverage to begin at 6:45.
