Oakley CHL Player/Goaltender of the Week Announced

Published on January 28, 2008 under Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release

The Central Hockey League announced today that the recipients for the Oakley CHL Player and Goaltender of the Week for the period ending January 27th, 2008 are center Riley Nelson of the Colorado Eagles and goaltender John DeCaro of the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs.

Nelson helped lead the Eagles to a perfect 3-0 week scoring three goals with three assists and recording a +5 plus/minus rating. The Cranbrook, British Columbia native started the week off with a great performance recording four points (2-2=4) in a 7-5 victory over the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. After a scoreless game in the Eagles 4-3 win at Arizona on Friday, Nelson rebounded with a shorthanded goal and an assist in Colorado's 4-3 win on Saturday night versus the Sundogs. The 5-9, 175-pound forward has posted an even or plus in each of the last nine games (+10) while racking up 17 points (8-9=17) over that stretch. For the season, the fifth-year Eagle has posted 373 points (154-219=373) in 280 career games.

DeCaro joins last week's winner, Miguel Beaudry of the Austin Ice Bats, as the weekly winner for the second time this season (DeCaro won previously the week of November 19th-25th). The Marysville, Washington native posted back-to-back shutouts last week including a 37 save performance in a 3-0 win at Oklahoma City on Friday and a 28 save effort on Sunday in a 2-0 win versus Rio Grande Valley. The 2008 CHL All-Star has posted seven shutouts on the season (one shy of the CHL record shared by four other goaltenders) and is a part of 10 Mudbugs team shutouts (a new CHL record). On the season, DeCaro is 15-4-3 with a league-best 1.71 goals against average and a league-leading .943 save percentage.

In recognition of their achievements, both Nelson and DeCaro will receive a special gift from Oakley.
