Daytona Tortugas News Release

Port Charlotte, FL - The Daytona Tortugas scored the final four runs of a rain-shortened game Tuesday, beating the Charlotte Stone Crabs, 4-1, at Charlotte Sports Park. Blake Trahan, Angelo Gumbs, and Jonathan Reynoso all drove in runs, as Daytona has taken the first two games of the series.

Charlotte struck first when Grant Kay launched a solo home run in the second to put the Stone Crabs on the board. It was Kay's third home of the year, and first in May. However, that was the only blemish LHP Seth Varner (3-1) would have, tossing a season-high 5 1/3 innings and allowing just the one run on five hits, while striking out four. The southpaw has allowed one earned run in all four starts this year.

Daytona then got the bats going, as Trahan knotted the game a solo shot of his own to left field, for his second homer of the season. The home run extended his career-high on-base streak to 24 games, which is tied for the longest streak in the Florida State League this season.

In the sixth, it was Trahan again setting the inning for Daytona, this time with a single. Aristides Aquino followed with a double in the gap to push runners to second and third. With two outs, Gumbs cranked a triple to right-centerfield, scoring both runners for the 3-1 lead.

Reynoso padded the Tortugas lead in the seventh inning with an RBI single, scoring Ronald Bueno in his 2016 debut, to put the Tortugas up 4-1. Bueno had gotten to third after a walk and errant pickoff throw.

Moments after the Reynoso base hit, the skies opened up and tarp was rolled on the field. The game was called after a 68 minute rain delay, giving the Tortugas the early victory.

Daytona continues the series Wednesday night with Charlotte, looking for their first three game winning streak. RHP Tejay Antone (2-3, 3.26 ERA) takes the hill for the Tortugas against rehabber Brad Boxberger. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM with the Chili's pre-game show beginning at 6:20 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.

Notes: Blake Butler extended his hitting streak to nine games with a single in his last at-bat. It's the second-longest for a Tortuga hitter this season, trailing Trahan's 11-game hitting streak...Leading up to the two-out triple, Gumbs was 2-for-his-last-21 since returning from the DL... It's the first rain delay and rained shorten victory for the Tortugas this season.
