DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - After consecutive gut-wrenching losses, Daytona ended their homestand on a positive note, as the Tortugas knocked off the Jupiter Hammerheads, 4-2, in front of 3,069 fans at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Thursday night.
The Tortugas (13-16, 48-46) started the contest with a bang. On the third pitch of the bottom of the first, DH Andy Sugilio (2-4, R, HR, RBI) yanked a ball to right that sailed over the fence for a solo home run. The 22-year-old's second blast of the season put Daytona ahead early, 1-0.
In the fourth, the green and white would extend their lead further. After the 'Tugas loaded the bases on three-straight walks to 1B Bruce Yari (0-3, R, BB, SO), 3B Yonathan Mendoza (1-2, R, 2 BB), and CF Lorenzo Cedrola (0-3, R, BB), LF Drew Mount (1-4, 2 RBI, SO) delivered. The Santa Clara, Calif. native poked a grounder through the right side of the infield for a hit. Two runners scored on Mount's single to make it a 3-0 contest.
Jupiter (14-15, 35-57) began to chip away in the fifth. The Hammerheads managed to saturate the bags courtesy of a trio of singles. CF VÃctor VÃctor Mesa (0-4, RBI) followed with a sacrifice fly to left to pull the Hammerheads within two, 3-1.
An inning later, RF Jerar Encarnación (1-3, R, BB) and DH Ãngel Reyes (1-4, SO) collected singles to put runners at the corners with one out. Like Mesa a frame before him, 3B James Nelson (1-3, RBI, SO) lofted a sac fly to right to trim the deficit down to one, 3-2.
Cedrola helped the Tortugas snag an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Subsequently after getting aboard via a fielder's choice, the 21-year-old swiped second base, advanced to third on a ground out, and then scored - making it 4-2 - on a wild pitch.
The Hammerheads would threaten in the ninth - putting the tying runs in scoring position with one out - but could not pull any closer. RHP Diomar López (1.0 IP, 2 H, SO) collected a strikeout and a grounder to second to quell the threat and seal his second save of the campaign.
It was another winning performance for RHP Austin Orewiler (5.0 IP, 4 H, R, ER, BB, 3 SO) on Thursday. The 26-year-old yielded one run over five frames to earn his team-leading seventh win of the season. Jupiter's RHP Jordan Holloway (4.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 8 BB, 4 SO) failed to make it through five and suffered his seventh-consecutive defeat and his eighth overall.
Daytona will embark on a 13-game, 14-day road trip beginning on Friday with a three-game series against the Lakeland Flying Tigers, the High-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. RHP Jared Solomon (0-4, 3.86 ERA) - Cincinnati's No. 30 farmhand according to MLBPipeline.com - is expected to take the hill for the Tortugas in the lid-lifter. Lakeland is scheduled to counter with RHP Garrett Hill (2-4, 2.52 ERA).
The Tortugas Pre-Game Show will kick off the broadcast at 6:15 p.m. ET, leading up to the 6:30 p.m. ET start at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium. Friday evening's game can be heard on www.daytonatortugas.com or via the TuneIn Radio and MiLB First Pitch apps.
Following the lengthy road trip, the Tortugas will return to The Jack to open up a three-contest set against the St. Lucie Mets, the High-A affiliate of the New York Mets, on Friday, August 2. Daytona continues its Best Dressed Friday series, as players and coaches will don special uniforms in honor of the 25th anniversary of comedy classic, "Dumb and Dumber". Those jerseys will be auctioned off online throughout the weekend. It will be another Friday Night Happy Hour presented by Kona Brewing with buy-one, get-one Kona beer products and Bud Light from 5:30 p.m. until first pitch. Finally, after the game, fans will be treated to another splendid Postgame Fireworks display.
