Lake County Captains News Release
(DAYTON, OH) - The Lake County Captains (36-33) stranded eight runners on base in a narrow 4-2 defeat against the Dayton Dragons (41-28) on an 85-degree partly cloudy Sunday afternoon at Day Air Ballpark.
Tommy Mace took the ball for the Captains, and entered in with previously 8.2 scoreless innings against the Dragons. He extended it to 9.2 after working around a walk and single in the first.
Justin Dunn got the start for Dayton, a rehab start. The Captains tacked on a run against him in the second. Angel Martinez walked and Johnathan Rodriguez doubled to put two runners in scoring position.
A groundout to second followed, that became a double play when Rodriguez sprinted to third without Martinez advancing and was tagged out. Zac Fascia would step up with two outs and lined a ball to left-center field driving home the game's first run.
Dayton took the lead in the bottom of the second, that they would not relinquish. Austin Hendrick and JV Martinez blasted back-to-back home runs to give the Dragons a 2-1 lead. In the third, Dayton posted two more runs on four consecutive base knocks. Mace would rebound and retire the next five hitters faced, completing four innings.
Lake County had scoring chances in the fourth and fifth inning. Gabriel Rodriguez and Quentin Holmes, both singled but a groundout ended the frame. The fifth began with a Joe Naranjo walk but a fielder's choice, strikeout and pop-out followed.
Gabriel Rodriguez brought the Captains closer in the sixth, hammering a solo homer over the left-field fence. Rodriguez has now eight two-hit games in June. Quentin Holmes would strike a two-out double in the inning but a groundout to second ended the effort.
Zach Hart entered in relief in the fifth for Lake County and allowed only one baserunner, tallying two strikeouts over two innings. Jaime Arias threw the seventh and eighth, also permitting only one hit and kept Dayton from adding to their lead.
In the final three innings, the Captains only had one batter reach. Johnathan Rodriguez was hit by a pitch in the eighth.
Lake County took four of the seven games played this week. The Captains and Dragons finish their season series with six games from July 12 to July 17 in Eastlake, OH.
Following an off-day, the Lake County Captains return to Classic Park and begin a six-game series with the Lansing Lugnuts on Tuesday, June 28. First Pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and is Buck Night with $1 Five Star brand hot dogs, 12-ounce fountain drinks, and domestic draft beer, presented by The Ohio Lottery.
