Today's Game: The Dayton Dragons (affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds) host the Lansing Lugnuts (affiliate of the Oakland Athletics) at Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District. This is the second game of a six-game series. Season Series: Dayton 4, Lansing 3.
Last Game: Tuesday: Dayton 4, Lansing 2. Justice Thompson hit a tie-breaking two-run home run in the seventh inning. Four Dayton pitchers combined to scatter nine hits as Lansing went 1 for 17 with runners in scoring position. Mat Nelson was 2 for 3 with a double and RBI for Dayton.
Winning Marks: The Dragons full-season record has not been below the .500 level at any time since the end of the 2019 season.
Top Prospects Join Dragons: In recent days, the Dragons have made numerous moves. Blue-chip prospect Noelvi Marte, who was acquired from the Mariners in the trade involving MLB all-star Luis Castillo, headlines the arrivals. MLB.com has slotted Marte as the Reds #1 prospect, while Baseball America has him ranked #3, behind Elly De La Cruz and Nick Lodolo. Left-handed starting pitcher Steven Hajjar, who was acquired from the Twins in the trade involving major league pitcher Tyler Mahle, has been added. Hajjar was the Twins second round draft pick in 2021 out of the University of Michigan. The Dragons received starting pitcher Chase Petty from Single-A Daytona. Petty was acquired in spring training from the Twins for MLB all-star Sonny Gray. Petty was the Twins first round draft pick in 2021. Within the last week, the Dragons have added relief pitchers Dennis Boatman, Frainger Aranguren, and Jean Correa, starting pitcher Javi Rivera, first baseman Michel Triana, and outfielder Ashton Creal.
The Dragons have scored 60 runs over their last 11 games (5.5 runs per game). They averaged 3.2 runs per game in July.
Dayton has hit 120 home runs, the most they have hit in a season since 2008 when they also hit 120. The Dragons are on a pace to hit 154 on the year (130-game season). The club record is 144 in 2001 in a 139-game season.
Brian Rey has played in 10 games with the Dragons, batting .325 with a home run and six runs batted in. He has hit safely in five straight games, batting .381.
