Day 2 at the Links: Hamburg's Sawicki Matches Course Record with 5-Under, 22
September 15, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
On Thursday night, two golfers established a new course record for The Links at Coca-Cola Field. It didn't take long on Friday for another golf to step up and match it.
Turning in one of the first scorecards of the day, Jake Sawicki of Hamburg matched the course record set twice on Thursday night with his own 5-under, 22. He is now tied with Simon Bennett of Aylesbury, England and Sean Lindstrom of Hamburg at the top of The Links leaderboard.
After a birdie on hole one, Sawicki went par-bogey-par to fall to even after the first four holes. But that's when he turned it on. Back-to-back birdies put him back in the red, and then after another par, he used the hockey-stick putter to one-putt the 19-foot eighth hole. All that was left was one more birdie on nine to end his round at mulligan-free 5-under.
Sawicki finished one stroke ahead of Nick Rossi from Orchard Park, whose 4-under round has him in a tie for fourth after the first two days of the competition.
On the women's side, there was a three-way tie at +5, first set by Mary Beth Sauers of Orchard Park and matched by Stacie Lutsic and Kaitlin Kramer of Buffalo. Sauers parred four of the first five holes in her solid round while Lutsic used birdies on five and eight for a score of 32. Kramer also had a pair of birdies with 2s on the sixth and eighth.
For the teams, Rossi was part of a Friday's best foursome with his group shooting -3. The group included Wayne Schwarzott (-3) of Orchard Park, Dan Frayne (+2) of Williamsville and Greg Kuter (+2) of East Aurora. They finished seven strokes ahead of Sawicki's group as well as the Grosse group from Lancaster and Colden.
Rick and Kyle Zurak combined to shoot four-over par as did Lee Cadby and Nate Marini of Lancaster. The are now slotted in a tie for second behind the Santopolo/Denisco group that shot three-over on Thursday.
The closest to the pin went to Matt Andrews of Williamsville, who stuck his shot on the ninth hole a mere 18 inches away from the cup. The three-year veteran of The Links at Coca-Cola Field used the birdie to top his foursome with a four-over, 31.
Saturday's round is the final the three-day Links at Coca-Cola Field competition. Limited tee times remain.
