DUBUQUE, Iowa - Jono Davis scored the first Fighting Saints hat trick of the season, but it wasn't enough, as Dubuque fell to Youngstown 5-3 at the Mystique Community Ice Center on Friday night.
The Phantoms capitalized in transition early in the contest, with Sam Anas knocking home a rebound for an unassisted goal just over four minutes into the game. After Fighting Saints captain Zemgus Girgensons was assessed a double minor and game ejection for spearing, the Fighting Saints were faced with a 5-on-3 penalty kill when they were given a bench penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. JT Stenglein hammered a puck home from the right point on the ensuing powerplay to put the Phantoms up 2-0. Dubuque would answer back midway through the period. Milos Bubela took the puck away from Youngstown in the Dubuque offensive zone and fed Jono Davis, who scored through Matt O'Connor's five-hole for his fourth goal in five games.
Stenglein scored his second goal of the game thirty seconds into the second period. As the Fighting Saints defensemen pinched up for an offensive chance, a turnover allowed Dylan Margonari to find Stenglein on a long pass. Stenglein finished with a backhand shot on the breakaway to give Youngstown a 3-1 lead. Just over three minutes later, Max Gardiner, who was stationed behind the net, fed the puck to Davis, who dove and batted the puck past O'Connor from the netfront to bring the Fighting Saints within one. The 3-2 score would persist into the third period.
Austin Cangelosi received a pass from Sam Anas early in the third frame, skated in on the Fighting Saints goal, and snapped a shot into the back of the net to put Youngstown up 4-2. Davis was not done scoring, however. After a Bubela shot rebounded in front, Davis stuffed it past O'Connor to score the first Fighting Saints hat trick of the season and bring Dubuque within one. The Fighting Saints turned the puck over in their own zone with an empty net in the final minute, however, and Soren Jonzzon scored to ice the game for Youngstown.
Another important conference game awaits the Fighting Saints Saturday night. The Indiana Ice, who are currently in second place in the Eastern Conference, will travel to Dubuque for a 7:05 puck drop.
