Davis Homers Twice, Sounds Win 10-2
August 31, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Nashville Sounds News Release
ALBUQUERQUE -- J.J. Davis blasted a pair of home runs to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 10-2 rout of the host Albuquerque Isotopes on Sunday evening.
The Sounds' victory means that their opponent in the first round of the playoffs will not be determined until the final day of the 2003 regular season.
If Albuquerque -- which holds a magic number of one -- can defeat Nashville tomorrow or second-place Colorado Springs loses either game of its doubleheader against Omaha, then the Isotopes will pack their bags for Nashville. Otherwise, it will be the Sky Sox who visit Greer Stadium when the postseason opens at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening.
Davis, who pulled into a tie for 3rd in the PCL with his 25th and 26th longballs in his only two at-bats of the evening, accounted for Nashville's first three runs. He smacked a two-run bomb in the top of the first then added a solo shot in the third, both at the expense of Albuquerque starter Justin Wayne.
Red-hot Sounds infielder Dave Doster got into the act in the fourth when his 12th homer of the season keyed a six-run inning that extended the Nashville lead to a comfortable 9-1. Doster finished the night 2-for-3 with four RBI and a pair of runs scored.
John Barnes and Aaron Holbert added two-hit efforts for the Sounds (80-62), who reached the 80-win plateau for just the ninth time in the franchise's 26-year history and for the first time since 1999.
Reliever Pat Mahomes (8-4) picked up the victory in relief of Ryan Vogelsong, who threw just one inning as scheduled as he prepares to start the Sounds' playoff opener on Wednesday. Mahomes tossed three scoreless frames and added an RBI double in his win. Wayne (4-12) took the loss for the Isotopes after surrendering six runs on five hits in only 3 2/3 innings of work.
The teams wrap up the 2003 regular season with a 2:35 p.m. CDT finale of their four-game series on Monday afternoon. Right-hander Matt Guerrier (4-6, 4.22) takes the hill for the Sounds to face Albuquerque right-hander Aaron Small (6-4, 4.64).
