EDMONTON, Alberta -- Peter Bergeron went 4-for-5 and drove in two runs with a first-inning triple to lead the Edmonton Trappers to a 7-2 win Sunday afternoon over the Portland Beavers.

The loss, the Beavers 74th of the year, assured Portland of its worst record in three seasons. The Beavers went 71-73 in 2001 and 72-71 last season.

The Trappers (72-69) sent 11 men to the plate in the first inning, scoring seven runs on six hits. Ryan Balfe and Jake Thrower hit RBI singles and Jeff Bailey and Scott Sandusky added run-scoring doubles as Edmonton took a 7-0 lead.

Portland starter Carlton Loewer allowed all seven runs, although only four were earned. Loewer (7-8) lasted five innings, giving up eight hits, walking two and striking out two.

Loewer, mired in a personal five-game losing streak, hasn't won since July 9, a string of eight starts.

With a seven-run lead, Scott Downs shutout the Beavers through five innings to earn the win. Downs (8-9) walked one and fanned two.

The Beavers (69-74) finally got on the board in the sixth, scoring two runs against reliever Blake Stein. Xavier Nady and Jon Knott hit RBI singles for Portland.

Nady and Bobby Scales each had two hits to lead the Beavers.

Portland plays its final game of the 2003 season Monday against Edmonton. First pitch is 12:35.

NOTES: in three seasons, the Trappers lead the season series, 29-18 ... the Beavers are 20-54 when their opponent scores first.
