ROUND ROCK, Texas – The rains came and the runs scored, but in the end, the San Antonio Missions were about two feet better than the Round Rock Express.

San Antonio took the 2003 season finale, 6-5, in a game shortened to five innings because of torrential rains.

Just before the game was called, though, Eric Cole came about two feet from sending the 9,380 home happy. With two on and two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Cole line a shot off Bobby Madritsch that landed just wide of the foul pole. Madritsch struck him out three pitches later and the game was called shortly after that.

The rain was the only thing that could slow down the two teams. The Missions got started in the first with a pair of runs only to see the Express answer in the bottom of the inning. Michael Rosamond doubled in two off of Madritsch to score the second and third runs for Round Rock

San Antonio met those three runs and raised the Express four more in the third, with the biggest blow coming from a two-run home run by A.J. Zapp.

Carlos Hernandez and Tommy Whiteman drove in runs in the fifth to turn a 6-3 deficit into the final 6-5 score, setting up Cole for his near dramatics.

The 9,380 that saw the game pushed the final attendance number to 685,973, setting a new standard for Double-A baseball.
