Akron RubberDucks News Release

(Trenton, NJ) April 24, 2014 - Akron RubberDucks righthander Kyle Davies struck out a season-high nine batters over six and 2/3 innings Thursday afternoon, picking up his second win of the season, as the RubberDucks defeated the Trenton Thunder, 4-1, at Arm and Hammer Park.

The win avoided a series sweep by the Thunder, and also gave the RubberDucks (10-10) a winning road trip. The team was 4-3, during the seven-game trip to Bowie and Trenton. Akron returns home to Canal Park to take on Altoona on Friday night at 6:35.

Davies (2-1) was brilliant from the start Thursday. He scattered three hits while working into the seventh inning. The only blemish on his stat line for the day was a solo homer allowed to Kyle Roller leading off the seventh. Davies walked only one and struck out nine Trenton hitters. He fanned leadoff-man Mason Williams three times. Davies threw a season-high 101 pitches, 71 of which were strikes.

The RubberDucks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning against Trenton starter Joel De La Cruz (2-2). Justin Toole laced a two-run double to left to bring in Ronny Rodriguez and Tony Wolters, both of whom had singled. In the fifth inning, also against De La Cruz, Francisco Lindor drove in two more runs with a triple to right, to make 4-0. Lindor finished the day with three hits.

After Davies exited, Shawn Armstrong worked through the eighth, striking out three. Lefty Giovanni Soto started the ninth inning and retired the first two hitters he faced. He worked a 2-2 count to Roller, but then left the game with an apparent shoulder injury. Righthander Jordan Cooper came out of the bullpen, and fired one pitch, getting a swing and miss by Roller, to end the game. Because the RubberDucks were leading by three, and no one was on base, Cooper was not credited with a save.

The 14 strikeouts by the four Akron pitchers is the most in a single game this season.

The RubberDucks will now return home and begin a six-game homestand on Friday night when they entertain Altoona in the opener of a three-game series. Game time is 6:35 p.m. Altoona is expected to send LHP Joely Rodriguez (0-2, 6.75) to the mound, while Akron is scheduled to counter with RHP Gabriel Arias (2-1, 1.80). Friday's game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM in Akron and also via www.AkronRubberDucks.com.

The Akron RubberDucks are the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. The 2014 season is the 18th since moving to Canal Park and the first as the RubberDucks.
