Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - For the second straight game the Pelicans struck first but couldn't hold on as the Dash took down the Pelicans 6-3 at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
The Pelicans struck for a run in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of CJ Lee's leadoff double down the right field line off Dash starter Charlie Shirek. The very next batter, Robert Marcial, singled home Lee to put the Pelicans up 1-0. That was the first, first-inning run Shirek has allowed this season.
The Dash answered in the bottom of the second off Pelican starter Erik Cordier. Brent Morel doubled to begin the inning and scored two batters later on a base hit by Joe Persichina. Persichina scored on a two-out single by Kent Gerst to put the Dash in front 2-1.
The Pelicans tied the game in the top of the fourth when Donel Linares singled, stole second and scored on a ground out by Cole Miles, one of Miles' two RBIs of the game.
Winston-Salem broke the tie quickly by plating three runs, all unearned, in the bottom of the fourth. With Persichina and Mike Grace on first and second, Kent Gerst attempted a sacrifice bunt and bunted it back to Cordier who threw wildly to third allowing both Persichina and Grace to score. Gerst came home on a sacrifice fly by Greg Paiml to make it 5-2.
Down 6-2 in the ninth, Cole Miles homered to right with two outs for his first round-tripper of the season to pull the Pelicans within three, but that's all the birds would get as they fell 6-3.
Shirek (7-0) went six innings for the win. He allowed just two runs on nine hits and struck out only one but didn't walk anybody. Cordier (0-2) took the loss for Myrtle Beach. He lasted just four innings and allowed five runs, only two earned, on six hits while walking three and striking out three.
The series concludes tomorrow night as the Pelicans send left hander Richard Sullivan to the mound against righty Levi Maxwell. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 at Wake Forest Baseball Park in Winston-Salem, NC. The Pelicans return home Friday night to begin a six-game homestand starting with three against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Friday night the first 1,000 fans receive a travel mug, mascot act Rally will be at the park on Saturday and fireworks follow the game on Sunday. Tickets are available by calling the Pelicans box office at (843) 918-6000 or online at myrtlebeachpelicans.com.
