Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Frederick defeated Lynchburg 9-5 on Wednesday night at Harry Grove Stadium. The Keys snapped Lynchburg's three-game win streak. The Hillcats and Keys will meet in the finale of the four-game series at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The Keys jumped out to the early lead with a three-run inning in the bottom of the second. Kraig Binick connected for a one-out single and scored when Hillcats centerfielder Alex Presley committed an error on Billy Rowell's single. Presley's error, one of three committed by the Hillcats, enabled Rowell to reach third base. Rowell scored on Caleb Joseph's groundout. Pedro Florimon Jr. followed with a solo home run that sailed over the left field fence and gave Frederick a 3-0 advantage.
Lynchburg responded with two runs in the top of the third. Jared Keel led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on Ray Chang's ground-rule double. Keel scored on a wild pitch from Frederick starter Brian Matusz. Following Presley's strikeout, Jose De Los Santos hit an RBI groundout that scored Chang and cut the deficit to 3-2.
With two outs in the top of the fourth, Miles Durham belted a solo home run to even the score at 3-3.
After Tyler Henson drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the sixth, Brandon Waring laced a double to left field that gave Frederick runners at second and third. Henson scored when Rowell reached on a throwing error by Jordy Mercer, putting the Keys in front 4-3.
The Keys added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh. Florimon Jr. singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on Rodolfo Cardona's sacrifice bunt. Following a groundout by David Cash, Bobby Stevens delivered an RBI single that plated Florimon Jr. and increased the lead to 5-3.
The Hillcats reduced the deficit in the top of the eighth. Chang walked to lead off the frame and reached second when Presley singled. De Los Santos advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Chang scored when Mercer reached on a fielder's choice that erased Presley at third and made it a 5-4 game.
Frederick answered with four runs in the bottom of the eighth to seal the victory. Waring led off the frame with a home run. After Binick struck out, Rowell and Joseph reached on consecutive walks. Florimon Jr. tripled to drive in both runners. Cardona's sacrifice fly scored Florimon Jr. and gave the Keys a comfortable 9-4 edge.
Lynchburg's attempt at a ninth-inning rally fell short. After Matt Hague and Durham each singled to start the frame, Kris Watts socked a ground-rule double that drove in Hague to make it 9-5. The Keys retired the next three Lynchburg hitters to preserve the victory.
Matusz (3-2) earned the win for Frederick while Chi-Hung Cheng (3-2) took the loss for Lynchburg. Luis Lebron picked up his sixth save.
With the loss, Lynchburg fell to 25-14. Frederick improved to 18-21. The Hillcats remain in first place in the Carolina League's Northern Division.
The Hillcats and Keys will square off in the series finale at 7 p.m. Thursday at Harry Grove Stadium.
