Danville Dashers News Release
Danville, IL - After a couple of weekends off and the addition of Matt McIlvane behind the bench as head coach, it was time for the Danville Dashers to get back to business. Unfortunately, it was the 1000 Islands Privateers closing any deals. Despite strong possession of the puck and nearly 40 shots on net, the Dashers fell to the Privateers 5-2.
The first period was a bit of struggle on the offensive side of the game. Both teams only managed a goal apiece. The lamplighter for Danville was Shane Ferguson, with help from Joe Pace and Ryan Stern, while Brad Smulders recorded the tally for 1000 Islands and Ryan Pearson and Jeff Winchester were credited with the assists. The lone penalty of the period also went to Smulders. Despite quality scoring chances, the Dashers were unable to convert the power play attempt.
The play opened up significantly in the second frame. The Privateers ramped up the scoring by finding the net three times. Two goals from Michael Richard and a lone strike from Adam McAllister left 1000 Islands with a 4-1 lead as the two teams skated into the locker room. The Dashers' power play dropped to 0-3 on the night after Morgan James and Michael Richard picked up a pair of slashing minors. The only other highlight of period two was a scrap between Chris Affinati, captain of the Dashers, and Chase Tippin. Even though Tippin brought a major height advantage to the fight, Affinati held his own as the two combatants exchanged expressions of respect as they skated to their respective penalty boxes.
The low scoring from the first period returned in the third as both teams only managed a goal each to finish out the contest. Brad Smulders tallied his second of the night halfway through the frame with help from Michael Richard and Ryan Pearson. Danville found the net in the dying embers of the period as Ray Tremblay found space through the goalie's pads. Brad Pawlowski of 1000 Islands and Hironori Kobayashi capped the penalty totals with a throw-down a couple of minutes past midway on the clock.
Despite the 5-2 defeat, the Dashers dominated in shot with a final total of 39 to the Privateers' 25. The Dashers will also look to improve on a power play that went 0-4 on the night. 1000 Islands collected all of the three star honors as Michael Richard, Brad Smulders, and Ryan Pearson were named first, second, and third stars respectively. If honorable mentions were given out, it definitely would have gone to Privateers' goaltender, Matt Anthony, who stopped 37 of 39 shots.
These same two teams will square off again tomorrow night. The puck drops at the Palmer Arena at 7:00. Tickets are just $8, while those 12 and under get a Christmas present by getting in the door FREE.
