December 22, 2011 - Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL) News Release

WHALERS BREAK OUTLAWS WINNING STREAK, WIN 3-2

DANBURY, CT - For the second night in a row, Danbury Whalers coach Phil Esposito filled out a line-up card and wrote just 14 names. For the second night in a row, his undermanned squad responded with a tenacious effort and a victory. This time, it was a huge 3-2 victory over the first place New Jersey Outlaws at the Danbury Ice Arena in Federal Hockey League action. The victory ended the Outlaws 14-game winning streak and handed them their first loss in six weeks.

The Whalers needed a quick start and they got just that from the red-hot Matt Moffat. Greg Holt fed him the puck up the wing and Moffat snapped it inside the post at 48 seconds of the first period for his ninth of the season. Holt set up Kelly Miller for Miller's ninth of the season at 17:08 to give Danbury its' first multi-goal lead against New Jersey in over a month. New Jersey came out in the third period and cut it to 2-1 on Kevin Cooper's 17th of the season off a shorthanded breakaway. The Outlaws tied the game on the power play at 5:45 as John Goffredo won a battle down low and tipped it past Whalers goaltender Peter Vetri. The third period became a tightly fought battle as both teams avoided making the big mistake. Players sacrificed bodies and sticks as the puck careened down the ice and each bounce grew in significance. The Whalers broke the draw as newcomer James Sanford unleashed a one-timer from the point that screamed between the pads of Outlaws netminder Adam Dekker. Holt and Miller got the assists at 10:56. The Outlaws battled to the end, drawing late penalties and crashing the net. Vetri required medical attention after a late scrum appeared to injure his hand but he stayed in the game, following a league-record 66 save night with 44 stops of 46 shots in his second victory over New Jersey. Dekker took his first loss of the year, falling to 8-1 with 24 saves. The three points kept Danbury's grip on third place in the FHL.

The Whalers and Outlaws return to the Ice Arena Friday night to for a 7:35 start. Tickets are available for this week and all upcoming Whalers games. Get your tickets by visiting thedanburywhalers.com or by calling 973-713-7547.

Special Teams Fuels Brooklyn Over Cape Cod, 6-3

BROOKLYN, New York - The Brooklyn Aviators collected their second straight win as they defeated the Cape Cod Bluefins, 6-3, on Thursday night in Federal Hockey League action at the Aviator Sports and Events Center.

Brooklyn cashed in on three power play goals in the game to help fuel their offense in the win over Cape Cod.

Newcomer Peter Drikos gave Brooklyn the 1-0 lead 5:15 into the opening period on his first goal of the season. Aviators forward Steve Koich threw a pass in front that found Drikos streaking through on the far side, and the defenseman buried the puck over the right pad of Cape Cod netminder Chris Testa. The Bluefins tied it late with 46-seconds left in the first on Kevin McCready's 13th tally of the year.

Brooklyn started the second period with a quick goal from rookie forward Jordan Bernier, his seventh of the season, on the power play at the 3:14 spot. Bernier took the pass from A's goalie Jo St. Pierre, broke in on the left wing side and snapped the puck over the right pad of Testa. Another newcomer lit the limp for the Aviators, as Brendan Baumgartner collected his first marker for Brooklyn with 10:51 left in the middle period, which also came on the man advantage. The Bluefins cut the deficit to one at 3-2 after Matt Cooke netted his first of the year at the 13:26 mark.

Ken Trentowski, Matt Atsoff and Jesse Felten all tallied for Brooklyn in the third period, which helped the Aviators cruise to their third victory over the Bluefins.

Dashers Out-Shoot, But Can't Out-Score Privateers

Danville, IL - After a couple of weekends off and the addition of Matt McIlvane behind the bend as head coach, it was time for the Danville Dashers to get back to business. Unfortunately, it was the 1000 Islands Privateers closing any deals. Despite strong possession of the puck and nearly 40 shots on net, the Dashers fell to the Privateers 5-2.

The first period was a bit of struggle on the offensive side of the game. Both teams only managed a goal a piece. The lamplighter for Danville was Shane Ferguson, with help from Joe Pace and Ryan Stern. Brad Smulders recorded the tally for 1000 Islands. Ryan Pearson and Jeff Winchester were credited with the assists. The lone penalty of the period also went to Smulders. Despite quality scoring chances, the Dashers were unable to convert the powerplay attempt.

The play opened up significantly in the second frame. The Privateers ramped up the scoring by finding the net three times. Two goals from Michael Richard and a lone strike from Adam McAllister left 1000 Islands with a 4-1 lead as the two teams skated into the locker room. The Dashers' powerplay dropped to 0-3 on the night after Morgan James and Michael Richard picked up a pair of slashing minors. The only other highlight of period two was a scrap between Chris Affinati, captain of the Dashers, and Chase Tippin. Even though Tippin brought a major height advantage to the fight, Affinati held his own as the two combatants exchanged expressions of respect as they skated to their respective penalty boxes.

The low scoring from the first period returned in the third as both teams only managed a goal each to finish out the contest. Brad Smulders tallied his second of the night halfway through the frame with help from Michael Richard and Ryan Pearson. Danville found the net in the dying embers of the period as Ray Tremblay found space through the goalie's pads. Brad Pawlowski of 1000 Islands and Hironori Kobayashi capped the penalty totals with a throw-down a couple of minutes past midway on the clock.

Despite the 5-2 defeat, the Dashers dominated in shot with a final total of 39 to the Privateers' 25. The Dashers will also look to improve on a powerplay that went 0-4 on the night. 1000 Islands collected all of the three star honors as Michael Richard, Brad Smulders, and Ryan Pearson were named first, second, and third stars respectively. If honorable mentions were given out, it definitely would have gone to Privateers' goaltender, Matt Anthony, who stopped 37 of 39 shots.

These same two teams will square off again tomorrow night. The puck drops at the Palmer Arena at 7:00. Tickets are just $8, while those 12 and under get a Christmas present by getting in the door FREE.
