Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Lynchburg, VA - Seth Loman hit a decisive three-run home run to lift Winston-Salem over Lynchburg 6-3 in the opener of a doubleheader on Sunday evening at City Stadium. Matt McSwain helped the Hillcats earn a split by tossing a complete-game shutout as Lynchburg blanked the Dash 6-0 in the nightcap. The two teams also split the four-game weekend series.

In game one, Lynchburg pounced on Dash starter Dylan Axelrod for a pair of runs in the first inning. Chase d'Arnaud led off with a double and was bunted to third. Jordy Mercer followed with an RBI single and then stole second base. With two outs, Matt Hague delivered a run-scoring single to give the Hillcats a 2-0 lead.

Axelrod (2-1) rebounded and kept the Hillcats scoreless over his final five innings. He allowed two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts over six innings to collect the win.

The Dash evened the score with a two-out rally against Rudy Owens in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs and the bases empty, Loman was hit by a pitch and Greg Paiml smacked a double to put both runners in scoring position. Tyler Kuhn followed with a two-run single that knotted the score at two.

Winston-Salem broke the game open in the top of the fifth inning against newly inserted reliever Harrison Bishop. C.J. Lang led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Justin Greene. Dale Mollenhauer put the Dash in front with an RBI single. One out later, Brent Morel registered a single to put runners on the corners with two outs. Next, Loman crushed a three-run home run to give Winston-Salem a 6-2 lead. It was Loman's 11th home run of the season and first since August 9th.

The Hillcats plated a run off Ryan Rote in the seventh inning before Tyson Corley took over and induced a game-ending double play grounder from Jamie Romak to preserve the win. It was Corley's fifth save of the season and second in as many games. Bishop (2-4) worked three innings of relief for Lynchburg and surrendered four runs on five hits to suffer the loss.

It was the first time Winston-Salem scored more than five runs in a game since July 28 when they defeated Kinston 10-5. It would also be all the runs they would score on the day as Matt McSwain held the Dash to three hits in a complete game shutout in the nightcap. McSwain did not allow a walk and struck out six to collect his 10th win of the season.

Once again, the Hillcats scored a pair of runs in the first inning as Jordy Mercer lifted an RBI sacrifice fly and Kris Watts added a run-scoring single off Levi Maxwell to give Lynchburg a 2-0 lead. Mercer struck again when he blasted a two-run home run in the third inning off Maxwell to double the Hillcats advantage to four.

Josh Harrison contributed an RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth inning and Jose De Los Santos added an RBI single in the sixth to finalize the scoring. Maxwell (4-14) only lasted three innings and allowed four runs on five hits and suffered his league-leading 14th loss of the season.

Winston-Salem will continue their eight-game, seven-day road trip when they open a four-game series against Salem on Monday night at Lewis-Gale Field. In the opener, the Dash will send RHP Anthony Carter (11-6, 4.16) to the mound, while the Red Sox will counter with RHP Kyle Weiland (5-9, 3.67). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

The Dash returns to Wake Forest Baseball Park on Friday, August 28 when they host a three-game series against the Lynchburg Hillcats. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. For more information on all the upcoming promotions or to purchase single-game tickets, visit www.wsdash.com or by call the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
