Potomac Nationals News Release
WOODBRIDGE, Va- In a bipolar doubleheader affair between the Salem Red Sox and Potomac Nationals, game one was a pitcher's duel between Adam Carr and Seth Garrison in which the Sox scraped by on a 3-1 score, but game two brought an offensive onslaught against the Sox which saw the P-Nats thump the Sox 14-0.
In game one, Adam Carr got the nod on the hill for the P-Nats, looking to build off his complete-game domination of the Winston-Salem Dash last Tuesday at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Carr (2-5) took the loss in the contest but his outing really boiled down to one bad pitch to left fielder Chih-Hsien Chiang with two outs in the sixth inning. Carr went 5 2/3 innings in the contest, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out two.
With the game still scoreless in the sixth inning, the Sox put two men on with two outs for Chiang who has been mired in a terrible slump recently. He worked the count full to 3-2 and let loose on an elevated pitch from Carr, launching his sixth home run of the season, a three-run shot, to give the Red Sox a 3-0 late in this ballgame.
The P-Nats would bounce back, finally scratching out a run against Sox starter Seth Garrison (8-10), who was flat-out brilliant on the hill in game one, tossing 5 2/3 frames, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out five P-Nats batters. Michael Martinez hustled out an infield single and moved to second on a walk to Danny Espinosa to open the door for Jesus Valdez, who is having a series to remember for the P-Nats.
After going 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI in game one on Friday night, Valdez laced a single up the middle to put the P-Nats on the board and knock Garrison out of the game. He also knocked a double in the first inning, finishing 2-for-3 on the afternoon. Unfortunately for Potomac, the Sox turned to All-Star closer Derrick Loop to douse the flames of the Nats' rally, picking up his 16th save of the season in the process.
Game two was a different story for both ballclubs. Salem was once again held off the board in the early innings, but Potomac brought their lumber against Sox starter Jose Capellan. Devin Ivany began a big day at the plate by lifting a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first, bringing home Danny Espinosa with the game's first run. But the Nats' bats were just getting started in the second contest of this double dip.
In the bottom of the second, the P-Nats loaded the bases on a walk and two bunt hits to lead off the frame when Espinosa nubbed a ball back to the mound which Capellan whiffed on making the play. That scored the second run of the game for the P-Nats before a bases-loaded walk to Valdez and a run-scoring ground ball from Burgess plated two more in the frame to push the score to 4-0. That set the stage for Ivany once again who blasted a three-run shot over the left-field wall, his fifth home run of the year, to give the Nats a 7-0 advantage.
In game two, Ivany finished the game 1-for-1 officially with a home run, four RBI, two walks, and two runs scored.
The Nats would tack on three more in the third off Capellan (5-3) thanks to back-to-back doubles from Greg Veloz and Boomer Whiting and a two-run home run from Espinosa, his 14th round-tripper of the season to push the rout to 10-0 en route to the 14-2 victory.
Trevor Holder, the 2009 third-round draft pick for the Nationals, picked up his second win of the year for the P-Nats, allowing just two hits in five innings on the mound. The Georgia product walked two and struck out two as well.
In the three-game series in which the P-Nats took two of three from the Red Sox, Potomac outscored Salem 26-5 while rapping out 31 hits.
The P-Nats now hit the road for their final series away from the Pfitz as the team travels to Myrtle Beach for four and Kinston for three. With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, the P-Nats find themselves just a game and a half behind the first place Wilmington Blue Rocks.
