Frederick Keys News Release

Winston-Salem, NC - Frederick had two runners thrown out at home, went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position, and left 11 on base in a 5-4 loss to Winston-Salem on Thursday night at BB&T Ballpark. First-place Lynchburg defeated Carolina, which dwindles the Keys elimination number to five.

The difference would be a three-run Dash sixth inning. With Garrett Cortright (0-1) on the mound, two errors on Adrian Marin handed the reliever three unearned runs. Nick Basto and Brett Austin reached the corners on the mistakes with no outs. The next batter, Nolan Earley, grounded one to first baseman Derek Peterson, but a late throw home gave the Dash a 3-2 lead they wouldn't relinquish. Michael Danner laced a two-run double to left to score Austin and Earley for a three-run cushion.

Frederick snapped a 23.1 scoreless inning drought in the fourth against Dash starter Spencer Adams (2-0). After leaving four on base in the first three frames, Marin went yard for a 1-0 Keys lead. Tad Gold and Jay Gonzalez followed with singles, and Tanner Witt brought Gold home on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0. With Witt on first and Gonzalez on second, Josh Hart grounded a ball to Keon Barnum at first. Barnum sent a throw to second to retire Witt, but Hart beat the relay to first. Gonzalez attempted to score from second base, but was set down at home to keep it a two-run Keys lead. Adams went six innings, allowed eight hits, two runs, and struck out four.

Keys starter John Means posted a scoreless first four innings, but need 75 pitches to do it due to 10-pitch, 9-pitch, and 12-pitch at-bats. He recorded the first two outs in the fifth, but Adam Engel doubled to right field, Jake Peter earned a walk, and Trey Michalczewski doubled them both home to knot it up at 2-2. Cortright stranded the runner at second to keep it tied. Means tossed 4.2 innings, allowed three hits, two runs, walked four, and struck out three.

The Keys scored a pair more in the seventh against Dash reliever Matt Cooper. Hart doubled to right field, and Wynston Sawyer walked with one out. A strikeout of Conor Bierfeldt, one that Orlando Gomez was ejected on for arguing, put two outs on the board, but Derek Peterson lined a two-run single to right field to cut the Keys deficit to 5-4. Peterson was left on base after Marin grounded into a force out.

Brad Goldberg (9) entered in the eighth to try for a six-out save. Gold and Gonzalez both knocked singles and to second and third on a Witt sacrifice bunt. Hart bounced one to Michalczewski at third, who one-hopped a throw home to get Gold at the plate. The Keys would load the bases with two away, but Sawyer struck out to end the threat. Frederick, on a three-game losing skid, will continue the four-game set in the Triad tomorrow at 7 p.m. Lefty Mitch Horacek (7-15, 4.54) is on the hill for the Keys against Dash right-hander and Chicago White Sox 2015 first-round pick Carson Fulmer (0-2, 2.81). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. The broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com. The Keys return home on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. against the Carolina Mudcats.
