Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Winston-Salem, NC - Winston-Salem continued its run of success in close contests by defeating Potomac 5-4 in the series finale on Thursday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. It was also the final meeting of the regular season between the two teams, who split the season-series at 10 games apiece.

Dash starting pitcher Justin Edwards (5-2) was solid in seven innings as he limited Potomac to three runs (two earned) on six hits with three strikeouts. He collected his first win at home and helped Winston-Salem improve to a league-best 28-13 in one-run contests.

For the first time in the series, Potomac plated the first run when they took a 1-0 lead against Edwards in the top of the third inning. Greg Veloz reached on an infield single and a throwing error on the play advanced him to second base. After a sacrifice bunt by Boomer Whiting moved Veloz to third, Michael Martinez followed with a run-scoring double.

The Dash bounced back with a pair of runs courtesy of a clutch two-out hit off Potomac starter Brad Peacock. Tyler Kuhn laid down a bunt single and Brent Morel followed with a double to put runners on second and third with one out. Peacock struck out Seth Loman swinging, but Justin Greene delivered a two-out, two-run single to give Winston-Salem a 2-1 lead.

Dale Mollenhauer extended Winston-Salem lead to three with a solo blast to lead off the sixth inning. It was the fifth home run of the season for the All-Star second baseman and first since he smacked a round-tripper off Lynchburg's Justin Wilson on July 2.

The Nationals bounced back with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning. Back-to-back one-out singles by Tim Pahuta and Dan Nelson put them on first and second base. Veloz hit into a fielder's choice which left runners on the corners with two outs. Boomer Whiting followed with an RBI single that trimmed Potomac's deficit to one. With runners on first and second and two down, the Nationals executed a double-steal and catcher John Curtis's throw to third sailed into left field which allowed Potomac to knot the score at three.

Winston-Salem jumped ahead in the next frame as they utilized small ball to plate a run. Justin Green was hit by a pitch to lead off and Curtis bunted him to second. An errant throw on a pickoff attempt advanced Greene to third and Sergio Morales tallied an RBI single to give the Dash a 4-3 edge. Greg Paiml supplied an insurance run when he started the bottom of the eighth inning with a solo home run that bounced off the top of the right field wall.

That insurance would prove beneficial as Veloz hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot of Santo Luis in the ninth inning to bring Potomac within a run. Luis bounced back and struck out Michael Martinez to register his fourth consecutive save and 12th of the season. Peacock (2-2) surrendered four runs (three earned) on seven hits in seven innings of work to suffer the loss.

The Dash will open an eight-game, seven-day road trip with a doubleheader against the Lynchburg Hillcats on Friday night at City Stadium. Winston-Salem is expected to start RHP Miguel Socolovich (3-1, 2.83) in the opener and RHP Levi Maxwell (4-13, 4.62) in the nightcap. Lynchburg will turn to LHP Jeff Locke (3-8, 5.19) in game one and RHP Matt McSwain (9-8, 3.69) in game two. Both contests are scheduled for seven innings with the first pitch of the opener set for 6 p.m.

The Dash returns to Wake Forest Baseball Park on Friday, August 28 when they host a three-game series against the Lynchburg Hillcats. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. For more information on all the upcoming promotions or to purchase single-game tickets, visit www.wsdash.com or by call the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
