Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Winston-Salem scored 13 straight runs after trailing early to beat up the Lynchburg Hillcats 13-3 on a cloudy night at BB&T Ballpark. Eight Dash players collected at least one RBI and eight of the nine starters scored a run, as Winston took the first of the three-game series.
After scoring only seven runs in the four-game set with Myrtle Beach, the Dash offense rounded back into form nicely after falling behind in the first two frames.
Lynchburg (17-25) began the scoring in the first inning off Dash starter Stephen Sauer. Carlos Mendez drove in a run on an error by Jon Gilmore and Neftali Soto brought home another on a single to right to give the Hillcats a 2-0 lead.
The visitors scored one more run in the top of the second on Alex Buchholz' infield single to go ahead 3-0.
The Dash (29-13) started its epic assault in the bottom of the second inning against James Avery (0-1), who was making his first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery last year. Luis Sierra drove in Seth Loman with a triple to right, and then scored on a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to one run.
Winston tied it up in the third on a Jon Gilmore sacrifice fly that scored Justin Greene, who led off the inning with a double.
As it had in last weekend's series with the Dash, defense hurt the Hillcats again on Friday night. Sierra reached on a Jose Gualdron error with one out. Kyle Shelton then popped out for what would have been the final out of the inning. Instead, Avery experienced the Winston-Salem offense in full force for the rest of the inning. After Jordan Cheatham walked, Greene tripled to right field, scoring both Sierra and Cheatham to give the Dash a 5-3 lead.
Greene then scored on a wild pitch to Brandon Short, who finished the barrage with his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to deep left to put Winston ahead 7-3.
The Dash didn't let up against new pitcher Andrew Bowman, who allowed all five men he faced to reach base. Bowman walked Gilmore, gave up an RBI double to Loman before allowing another walk and a single to load the bases. He proceeded to walk Shelton on five pitches to force in a run and make it 8-3 Winston.
Jeff Jeffords came in for Bowman, but the results did not change. On his first pitch, Jeffords was greeted by a two-run single off the bat of Cheatham. After Greene grounded out, Short hit an RBI single and Eduardo Escobar hit a sacrifice fly to finish the scoring. After a six-run fifth inning, Winston-Salem led 13-3. The Dash had turned a 3-0 deficit into a ten-run lead in just four innings.
Brandon Kloess made his Carolina League debut, pitching the last two innings to preserve the win for Sauer (4-1). The sinkerballer won his third straight start after throwing seven innings of three-run ball.
Avery took the loss after giving up seven runs (three earned) in four innings.
Greene came within a home run of the cycle after doubling in the third, tripling in the fourth, and singling in the seventh. He went 3 for 4 on the night with two RBI and two runs scored.
Sierra went 2 for 5 and scored three times on the night while collecting an RBI.
With the win, the Dash improved to 4-0 against the Hillcats this season.
Winston goes for the series victory on Saturday night in game two. RHP Nate Jones (3-1, 3.80) opposes RHP Lance Janke (1-3, 5.46) in 7 p.m. start. The webcast pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m. on www.wsdash.com.
