Dash Rocks Cats In Series Opener

Winston-Salem pounded out a 13-3 series opening win over Lynchburg at BB&T Stadium on Friday night. Devin Mesoraco (pictured) had three hits to extend his reached safely streak to 27 games, now the longest streak this season in the Carolina League. Hillcats will look to even the series on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. in Winston-Salem.

The Hillcats jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Carlos Mendez brought in the first run when he reached on an error and Neftali Soto singled in a run as well. Lynchburg extended their lead in the second with another run on an RBI single by Alex Buchholz to make it 3-0 game.

Winston-Salem would come charging back by plating 13 runs over the course of four innings to take a 13-3 lead. Luis Sierra had an RBI triple in the second, Justin Greene smacked a two-run triple in the fourth and Brandon Short had a solo homer in the fourth inning as well. In the fifth inning the Dash scored six run as the first six that came to the plate reached safely and came around to score to give the Dash a 13-3 lead.

The 13 runs marks the most runs the Hillcats have allowed this season. Lynchburg is now 3-11 in their last 14 games played.

The loss went to starter James Avery (0-1) for Lynchburg (17-25), who was making his first start of the season after recovering from Tommy John surgery. The win went to starter Stephen Sauer (4-1) for Winston-Salem (29-13). The middle game of the three-game series takes place on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem. Right-hander Lance Janke (1-3, 5.46) will get the nod for the Hillcats opposite righty Nate Jones (3-1, 3.80) for the Dash.
